Genre elements Conventions presented in the Call The Shots Video
Performers/Characters – Characters are stereotypical of the genre through their
representations, clothing and action. The characters have a ‘gangster’
stereotypes, behaviour, style to them which is backed up by the clothes they
body language, specific wear also and their accessories such as chains.Their
pop stars behaviour reflects their age as they act youthful as they
sing and dance in a club. Pop stars who sing the song
sing in the video while anonymous young people dance.
The video represents society and how today’s youth
behave. It is a very modern genre of the genre of music.
Genre Type: The genre type of the video is performance based as

Iconography – props, Props such as the microphone show the genre of the
symbolic codes media and the use of a modern iPhone again reflects
society and that the music and the video is supposed to
be very modern.
2. Setting- mise en scene The setting is stereotypical as it is set in a dark club
which is typical of the genre as it shows modern day
society. It is also typical of the genre because the hip
hop/pop genre is seen as a suburban type of music and
very general. The video supports this by some of the
videos setting is outside in a very suburb area which
reflects how most cities are today with many buildings
around it. The city life can also represent the average
working class person’s life. The costume used by the
characters shows this as they are dressed very casually
and stereotypically of what they are doing in the video.
Example being the jeans, trainers and checked shirts are
generally what street dancers and public dancers wear,
stereotypically.
Technical and audio Throughout the video many close ups are used focusing
codes – camera use, on characters faces such as the singers to emphasise
editing, lighting, who they are. Also many clips are performed in slow
diegetic/non diegetic motion so the audience can take in everything that is
sound, sfx going on. Then again medium shots are used to show
the singer with the large crowd of youngsters dancing
and enjoying themselves in front of the singers and
performers.

Performers/Characters – The behaviour of the characters can be seen as
representations, rebellious as they are sat in a living room very casually

pop stars where they ‘don’t care’.

Iconography – props, Props such as the cigarettes in their hands can
symbolic codes represent the rebellious of them and can reflect their
genre. Another prop used is the microphone which is
used in their performance this could be a symbolic code
of a phallic object of the dominance of the males on the
stage. Beer bottles and cigarettes reflect the society
they are in and how they are acting as stereotypical
males.
Setting- mise en scene The setting is stereotypical as it is set in a dark room in a
city which is in a very public city setting. This can link to
the genre as it is very mainstream and public also.
Characters are stereotypical of the genre through their
clothing and action. Another setting is the stage that
they perform on which represents their profession and
what the whole song is based around. Another setting
in the video is in a casual pub whilst they are drinking
and smoking and being stereotypical 1980’s men as
they are playing snooker in the pub. They wear casual
jeans and tops and fit in with the rest of the people in
the pub.
4. Technical and audio Low lighting is used throughout the scene of being sat in
codes – camera use, their living room to show their rebellious type of genre
editing, lighting, and also the mood that they are showing. Close ups are
diegetic/non diegetic used to emphasis on the condition of the characters
sound, sfx and the mood and attitudes they are showing.Long
shots are used on the stage when performing to get a
view of the whole audience and gives you a general
feeling of the atmosphere they are in. the lighting is
again dark but however strobe flashing lights are used
to emphasise that it is a live performance.

Performers/Characters – The two characters in the video are female and male
representations, acting as stereotypical young adults with their love
stereotypes, behaviour, affair. They behave very rebellious in a sexual way as
body language, specific they are kissing in every scene with sexual gestures
pop stars throughout. This is expected stereotypically because of
their genders and their age. The body language of the
characters is very enthusiastic throughout as they are
both positive all the time because of the situation they
are in with each other. However the behaviour and
body language becomes much more aggressive as they
break up in their relationship which reflects their age as
they can be seen as immature.
Genre Type: The genre of the video is narrative as there is a storyline

both single and emotional.
5. Iconography – props, Props such as pills are used to represent the youth of
symbolic codes the characters and the society that they are currently
living in. also the bed is used to represent the society
they are in but also to represent their relationship of
being in love and their sexual activity.
Setting- mise en scene There are numerous setting which is expected in the
video because of the title and how they ‘find love’ in
‘hopeless places’ examples being a take away shop as
they fall in love. The same occurs in a cornfield again
where they show their love through kissing and showing
sexual references. Later on the same occurs at a
skateboarding park, a supermarket, and then finally the
bedroom. Then finally they have arguments and break
up which occurs in the arcade. All these random
locations are used to show that they are truly in love as
love occurs anywhere, however that linear is then
broken at another random location.
Technical and audio Close ups are used on both characters throughout to
codes – camera use, show the different emotions they go through at
editing, lighting, different locations. However medium and long shots
diegetic/non diegetic are used to show the locations of where they are and
sound, sfx the atmosphere they are in. bright lights are used
throughout when they are happy together to show the
brightness and positivity of the relationship, then when
they have their disruption the mood changes and dark
lighting shows the negativity of the relationship.
