Slide show on organ donation. Needs a presenter. Open to notes view and all instructions are there including suggested language. No permission needed for use only attribution.
Say nothing…the heart will beat…just let the slide sit there for a couple of moments…(Click when ready for next slide)
Allow yourself to be introduced. Say nothing and click this first slide. After a few moments when the audience has had time to digest it say, “This doesn’t have to happen and in the next few minutes I’m going to tell you why and what you can do to help.”Click next slide
My name is and I’m a…(tell a very little about yourself and you can use no more than 4 bullet points below…keep it short but you need to set up your credibility as a speaker with some kind of sympathetic or empathetic language. Change the bullet points to fit your brief bio)Click to next slideThis is a good place to ask the audience for a show of handsHow many of you have had some experience with organ and tissue donation, transplantation or both? How many of you are organ donors or plan to be?Ok…let’s continue (click next slide)
(check the latest figures www.unos.org )Did you know that there are 114,000 people on the national transplant waiting list. They are waiting for lifesaving or enhancing organs and tissue and we’ll be outlining specifically what they are shortly..114,000 people who are waiting. And here’s what most people don’t know. In order to be listed for an organ transplant, a specialist in your disease has to certify to a transplant panel that you have an end-stage disease… and that you will die without a transplant. That means everyone on the list is dying! Medical science has no more tricks up its sleeve. (Click next slide)
‘and…while 114,00 are waiting there will only be about 28,000 transplants done this year. That means … well you do the math. A whole lot of people are going to get sicker and many will die. Could transplant teams do more transplants? Sure they could…but first they need more organs, and Americans are just not stepping forward as organ donors fast enough. (click for next slide)
Give the audience a few moments to read and digest this information …let some silence do its drama for you….then say”And do you know why this happens? It’s because people either failed to register as donors or because families did not know their loved ones wishes and said no to the request for donation. 20,000 organs gone to waste and perhaps 20,000 lives with them…not to mention the valuable tissue that could have benefited thousands of other people. Click now to main Title slide…and let it play out
Say nothing…the heart will beat…just let the slide sit there for a couple of moments Then (Click to next slide)
(“How many people…..” will appear automatically)…Then you can again ask the audience….for their estimate…get some answers and then click so the 60 lives message pops up.
Just click….and say….These are the faces of real people involved with transplantation. (click next slide)
( Click and bring up the 113,000 number) As was mentioned earlier that are about 113,000 people on the waiting list but there are less than 30,000 transplants done each year. Obviously a huge gap but wait…the news gets worse. (Click..bring up 2 million deaths) Each year about two million people die in the United states. Let me ask the audience a question…of those two million how many do you think are suitable donors? (tale some guesses then click bring up the 17,000) only 17,000 out of 2 million are suitable for one reason or another. That’s not very many and that’s why we must get beyond depending on donation aloneClick) In the meantime 7,000 of those on the waiting list will die from organ failure and, that figure doesn’t even count the number of people who can’t afford the care that is necessary to even get on the list. We don’t know how many die because they can’t afford the care they need. (Click) becoming a donor is soooooo easy. The obvious way to become one is to have “Organ Donor” put on your drivers license when you renew it but what if you are not up for renewal yet and you want to become a donor? Even easier….go to www.donatelife.net. (Click) the following Donate Life slide is self animated. Just click on it and let it go until you see the donor card. Ask for questions if you like..then(Click) to the next slide
Keep slide up for a few moments and then say, “remember that just signing a donor card may not be enough. Each year thousands of transplantable organs are buried because families said, “No.” It is very important that people know about your decision to become a donor. Click Next slide
Click again when slide comes up. The rest is automatic and each bullet will appear after a 3 second interval. When the slide is fully revealed let it sit there a moment before clicking to the next slide.
Slide comes up and shows agony of waiting…the you say, “ for the last several years the number of transplant operations performed in the U.S. has been static…about 28,000 (click to 28,000 number and old the slide ) but the number of people on the waiting list keeps growing ..today it stands at (give current number) the gap between the number of organs available and the number of patients who need them is growing and we are falling farther and farther behind every day. Let’s look at the breakdown of people on the list and which organ they are waiting for. (Click to next slide)
You need not say anything here If you don’t want to. The data speaks for itself Let each number linger for a moment or two before clicking to the next number. At end of slide after 2,000 need heart lung combo’s hold for a moment or two then (click) to next slide.
Before you click (Click) give people time to read it again after it has scrolled through once. Then (Click) to next slide.
Before you click to the express…say, “There are lots of authorities on organ donation but the one who says it best is one that everyone understands and loves…(Click) then (Click) again after they’ve had a chance to read it.
When this slide comes up…explain that Organ Transplant Initiative is a Facebook group that was started November of 2007 and now has about 2,000 members from around the world. While we are a support group for our members we also provide up to date information about donation/transplantation issues. Our Mission, though, is quite simple (click)…then let them read it and (Click) again for next slide.
Before you click on Myth..you might say, because of a history of discrimination many minorities are suspicious of organ donation. There’s no reason to be…(CLICK) …”That’s not true but a common misperception. Here’s the fact (Click) When slide is done, and they’ve had time to read the Wrong Again fact,Click to next slide and just let it roll through, it has automated animation.
There are many myths surrounding Organ Donation and I want to take some time here to dispel some of the more serious misconceptions. First this one(click) (the myth will come up with the explanation. When done you (click) again and fact shows up with the first bullet. Then you must click again for each of the two following bullets. You can use ad-lib short comments with teach of these fact bullet points…for example…on the first one “It never happened” you can add, there is no evidence anywhere in this country (the U.S.) that anything even remotely resembling this myth has ever happened. Click to next slide
When slide comes up you can say, “Here’s Myth number two and it is a very common, albeit untrue belief. (Click to myth) then say, “nothing could be farther from the truth…(Click) Fact comes up followed by “You’ll be seen….)Click to next slide
When slide comes up you can say, “here’s still another myth that prevents people from becoming organ and tissue donors.” (Click)…after they’ve had a moment to absorb the screen language(Click) fact and Unlike coma patients…will come up. Let them read it and say, “Brain death is not like a coma and it’s not like being in a vegetative state either because…(Click) vegetative data comes up. “Brain death is determined after several neurological and other tests are performed by highly qualified physicians and their teams. Neither the brain death experts nor the transplant team are associated with the medical team that gave the initial care. They only get involved when the original medical team determines that all life saving measures have been exhausted.”(Click to next slide)
Let slide come up but before you click on definition say, “People always ask about brain death…what is it? Here is the commonly accepted word-wide definition.” (Click) let them read it…give plenty of time…this is a very important slide. (while I don’t often recommend that presenters read a slide to an audience, this might be one of those times. It will have added impact if you read it out loud as it appears).(Click to next slide)
Before clicking on language here, you can say “If the person is dead why are they are life support after they’ve been declared dead? Well, they are not placed on life support because there is no life there…the support mechanism is for their organs. Click on “organ support” language
Click on federal law language then say, “This restriction is just another guarantee that if you go to the hospital the people there will do everything humanly possible to save your life.” Click next slide
The myths that persist need to be thoroughly destroyed so let me take a minute or two to discuss the entire donation process. First…Click “When there is a death the hospital by law, must notify the organ procurement organization, known as an OPO, that a death has taken place.Click “ A specially trained OPO staff person evaluates the suitability of the donors organs for transplantation…remember very few people who die are suitable donors..the number is about 2%.Click “ If the patient is registered as a donor another specially trained OPO representative will fully inform the family or significant others about the situation and the patients wishes.Click Finally…if the wishes of the patient are unknown the OPO coordinator will talk with the family about donation options which include not only donation of tissue and organs but perhaps whole body donation for medical and scientific education purposes.Click next slide
Click if it has been determined that the patient is a suitable donor and the family agrees then the OPO begins the process to make it happen.Click The coordination effort is long and complex but must be done fairly quickly to be sure the donor organs remain viable.Click Now is the time that the surgical organ recovery teams are called in. Up until this point they did not know about the patient or that death had been declared.Click You can probably see as a result of listening to me that the process is long, involved and takes a while. Click next slide.
This is the question everyone has on the tips of their tongues. Click first bullet…All of the information that is available about the donor and people on the waiting list is fed to the computers. The matching information is very technical and comprehensive because with such an acute organ shortage it is important that every organ go to the best possible matching patient. Click Potential recipients list is generated based on matching criteria. Please note no one’s name is on the list and no one’s social status is either. The system can’t discriminate because it is blind.Click ….no need to say anything on this bulletClick a great deal of time and effort from some very smart people including surgeons, coordinators, ethicists, patients and public members went into developing the policy and it is constantly under review.
When this slide has completed and before you click to the next one you could, if time permits, ask the audience why they think this is true. Why the very low donation rate? You can say, “All good answers and no on knows for sure but we suspect that while patients feel a real urgency for attracting new donors, the donors themselves don’t feel any urgency at all because they don’t‘ think they are going to die any time soon, so what’s the rush? We have to instill in others the sense of urgency because no one knows how long they will live and it would be a terrible thing to “intend” to be an organ donor but die before you get around to doing it. (Click…next slide)
Before you click to enter the bullet points you can say, “When the first transplant surgeries were done there were far more organs available than there were patients who needed them. But as time went on and the surgeries became more common and more refined the demand soon outstripped the supply. In 1968 The United States adopted the Uniform Anatomical Gifts act which set the standards for donation that we still follow today. Here’s what our system allows for(Click) first bullet, click again for second bullet. Before you go to the next slide you can say….”So if we aren’t getting enough organs what can we do about it? Well, there are several options. One, that is most commonly discussed and that has been adopted in several countries is called,(Click) Presumed consent next slide.
“So what is Presumed consent? (Click) first bullet, Spain has had an incredible increase in donations as a result of changing to PC but they still fall well short of meeting the demand” Click next bullet. “PC has been discussed a lot I the country but always rejected for “Ethical” reasons. I can’t speak to those reasons but one might ask, this, how ethical is it to continue to let people die who are on the waiting list. Obviously it can be a very sensitive debate.(Click) next slide
One of the most controversial of the options is offering some kind of payment to organ donors. (Click first bullet) Call them incentives or compensation opponents say it’s the same as selling organs. But … proponents say that the incentive might be something different (Click second bullet). And then of course there are cash payments (click) and no one seems to want to touch that one. Although, consider this, women sell their eggs and men sell their sperm regularly and almost no one ever objects. (click next slide)
Before you click on the first bullet you can say, “ In discussing altruistic and presumed consent organ donation along with the possibility of incentives, we’ve been talking about political or social solutions to the problem. But there are other solutions as well and they hold great promise. (Click first bullet. Did you know that the Salamander and the Newt, two amphibian animals, can regenerate their own limbs, eyes, faces? Scientists have been curious about that for along time and they are looking into doing it with humans. We can already regenerate our own liver so maybe…..? (Click second bullet. Therapeutic cloning is not to be confused with whole body cloning because it isn’t the same at all. Therapeutic cloning would reproduce organs like livers, kidneys and hearts. And finally click third bullet) Mechanical organs.(click next slide)
Click…first bullet liver. “People have two kidneys so they can donate one and still live a healthy life but, we only have one liver. Yet,people can donate a part of their liver because if it is healthy it will regenerate in both bodies so that in time, both the donor and the recipient will have fully functioning livers.. click second bullet. Lots of controversy surrounding embryonic stem cells but none about adult stem cells and a good deal of progress is being made in both areas right now.(click next slide)
So let’s look at Therapeutic cloning. Remember now, this is about cloning organs, that’s all. Click first bulleted…don’t need to say much about this. Click, second bullet. Sometimes you need to say things a few times to be sure everyone understands and gets the message. Click third bullet. “This is the really neat part. If therapeutic cloning works we won’t need any more human donors or mechanical devices. That would be equivilent to a modern day miracle. (click fourth bullet) and with no anti rejection medicine needed guess what happens to your cost of healthcare(click next slide)
Briefly…some other potential benefits of Therapeutic cloning. (Just click away till the end of the slide. Make comments where you feel appropriate.Click to next slide
Click first bullet…Artificial hearts have been around in one form or another for quite some time and they work. Unfortunately we don’t have one yet that is implantable and forgetable but they’re working on it. Left Ventricular Assist Devices, LVADs as they are known, can keep heart failure victims alive for a long time but the goal is still to get a heart transplant.(Click) second bullet While the implantable kidney has been designed its still a long way from being implantable but progress continues and technology is moving so fast we could hear of a successful trial before too long. The pressure is really on for the kidney because the great majority of people on the national transplant list are kidney patients. (click) third bullet. The Bio Lung is not only under development they have reached the point where it can function on plain air not just oxygen as previous mechanisms did. This holds great promise but still not implantable. And finally (Click…fourth bullet) the artificial liver. It will be interesting to see which comes first, the artificial liver or the regenerating liver. The liver is one of the few human organs that has regenerative powers so it could come sooner than we think. (Click next slide)
Just let the slide come up and sit there for a moment or two then say, “We are our own worst enemies because we just don’t take very good care of ourselves. (click next slide)
This slide is self explanatory. The symptom of obesity is diabetes but people would rather treat the diabetes than make the effort to lose weight….it’s not a criticism, it’s human nature. (click next slide)
I don’t think I need to say anything about this one.Click to next slide
Just let this slide pop up and speak for itself. After giving the audience time to read it say: There is a way to diminish the need for organs that almost no one talks about and that is to take better care of ourselves and to stop behavior that could be harmful to one or more of your organs. (click for next slide)
Before you click on the language here, just say this “Here’s a sobering note”Click and let them read it.
Ok…let’s get specific. Let’s talk about the heart and what the hazards are…nothing new here…(the bullets will role automatically once youclick on the first one. When done with the bullets say, “Nothing new in any of those items but how many of you can honestly say you are doing everything right?...I don’t need an answer, you need to answer that for your selves. Think about this(click on change one of these habits….) and let the slide sit for a moment before clicking to the next slide.
So much for the heart…now the lungs. Do you know what it’s like to be totally out of breath or to have congestion where you can hardly breathe. Some people live like that all the time. (click on the you will never full appreciate….) wait until they read it…you can ask at any time…”Any comments?” thenclick to next slide.
Here are some things you can do to help your lungs and to prevent lung disease as you get older. After you Click the first bullet the rest will roll automatically. After the last bullet say…”That singing you do when you are alone in the car or in the shower…it’s actually good for you…you may look silly to the driver next to you but its great lung exercise so sing at the top of your lungs…just be sure the windows are closed.Click to Next Slide
Ok, we’ve covered heart and lungs, what about the liver? Click on the first bullet and the rest will come up automatically. If they ask about activity vs exercise tell them that washing the dishes is activity, exercise is a brisk half mile walk. And, of course, water is the great cleanser there is nothing better that we can drink. (click next slide)
You have two kidneys but don’t get over confident. It doesn’t mean you have one to waste you have to take care of both of them and here’s how. Click on each bullet and comment between if you like. When doneclick to next slide….
I want to leave you with this thought. Click on final item. Let sit for a moment and say, “in a moment I’ll take a few questions but first let me repeat the information about organ donationClick to next slide.
Let them look at it a minute and thenclick to next slide
Thank you for your kind attention…now if you have any questions I’ll do my best to answer them.Click to final slide and leave it up during the Q and A session.
Say nothing…the heart will beat…just let the slide sit there for a couple of moments
