3. Why a Sermon on Adultery ?
l A Fundamental concern of God's: # 6/7 of 10
l Adultery rates are increasing in the US & Church
- Internet porn, adult chat rooms, text messaging
- Viagra, Cialis, etc
- Sex-saturated society. Greater moral decadence
- Liberal seminaries, weak churches, silent churches,
heretical churches, poor leadership examples
- Presidential adulterers defiled the land.
- More women in workforce. Office romances.

4. Why Adultery is Sin
l Adultery destroys marriages and families
l Adultery greatly damages people God loves
l Affects generations of children in that family
l Brings dishonor to Jesus in Christian lives
l Promotes adultery in others

5. Children Damaged by Adultery
l Children of broken homes pay a big price
- Broken-home children are 'five times more likely
to suffer mental troubles'
- more likely to do badly at school, suffer poor
health, and fall into crime, addiction and poverty as
adults.
- They were nearly three times more likely to exhibit
a conduct disorder.

6. Why People Commit Adultery
l They believe lies
about themselves
l They are trying to

7. God's View of Adultery
l He hates the sin. So should we. Read Prov. 5, 6, 7
l Adultery is “playing with fire,” (Prov. 6:27)
l Like “an ox going to slaughter” (Prov. 7:22)
l “But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool,
for he destroys his own soul. (Prov. 5:4)
l But He loves the sinner. So should we.
l He restores adulterers to Himself and to others.
l So can we as a church.

8. Hosea's Chosen Adulteress
l God uses Hosea's marriage to Gomer as an allegory
of His relationship to Idolatrous Israel
l He marries a prostitute. She is unfaithful.
l God tells him to take her back: “Then the LORD
said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved
by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the LORD
loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other
gods and love raisin cakes.” (Hosea 3:1)

David & Bathsheba
l Godly king commits adultery & murders

l God confronts, rebukes and forgives
l Allows David to stay king, marry Bathsheba
and gives them Solomon.

10. l However, there are family penalties: II Sam 12:
10-11:
l “ From this time on, the sword will be a
constant threat to your family, because you
have despised me by taking Uriah's wife to be
your own.
l Because of what you have done, I, the LORD,
will cause your own household to rebel against
you. I will give your wives to another man,
and he will go to bed with them in public
view.
l Loss of son due to dishonor of God's name

11. God Loves Adulterers:

and leave your life of
sin.'” (John 8: 9-11)

12. How to Restore Adulterers
l Forgive & do not condemn
l Lovingly call them to full repentance
l Help them find truth for lies they carry
l Encourage confession to others and
accountability (Randy)
l Help them fall in passionate love with God
l Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the
old has gone, the new has come! (II Corinthians 5:17)

13. God's Promise for Adulterers
“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit
the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor
adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual
offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor
drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will
inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what
some of you were. But you were washed, you
were sanctified, you were justified in the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our
God. (I Cor. 6:9-11)
