Two-term governor of NY
Won in an overwhelming
victory against Republican
Herbert Hoover
Captured nearly 23 million votes
to Hoover’s 16 million
Republicans conceded prior to
the election they had little
chance of wining
Americans blamed the
Depression on Hoover
Democrats claimed 2/3 in the
Senate & 3/4 of the House
3. WHAT DID FDR STAND FOR?
Strong stand on public power
Promised to reduce federal
expenses
Promised to balance the budget
Roosevelt did not explain how
the government could both aid
the public and balance its own
books while operating on a
reduced budget
But that didn't matter the
American public trusted him
4. THE BRAIN TRUST
After his election – and before
taking the oath of office -
Roosevelt picked his advisers
They were
professors, lawyers, and
journalists
Known as the Brain Trust
They created a set of programs
and policies with the sole
intention of alleviating the
problems of the Depression
This collection of programs and
policies became known as the
New Deal
5. THE NEW DEAL
Roosevelt’s New Deal
policies focused on 3 areas:
Relief for the needy
Economic recovery
Financial reform
March 9th to June 16th, 1933
A period of intense activity
known as the Hundred Days
Congress passed more than
15 pieces of New Deal
legislation
6. THE 100 DAYS
Roosevelt’s first step was to
carry out reform in banking and
finance
Roosevelt declared a bank
holiday and closed all banks a
day after taking office
Ordered the Treasury
department to inspect all banks
Sound banks could remain open
Helped lend confidence to banks
Customers knew the banks that
were open were in good financial
shape

needed to invest in banks
7. ALPHABET SOUP
Created a series of programs intended to aid
in economic recovery
Civilian Conservation Corps (Relief) [CCC]
Took unmarried men aged 18-25 and sent
them to plant trees, & build parks
Public Works Administration (Recovery)
Built 34,000 construction projects:
Public buildings
Highways and bridges (e.g., San
Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge)
Social Security Administration (Reform)
Established to administer:
National pension fund for the retired
Unemployment system
Assistance programs for
mothers, children, and the physically
disabled
8. THE NEW DEAL…ATTACKED
Liberal critics argued the New
Deal did not go far enough to
help the poor and reform the
economy
Conservative critics argued
Roosevelt spent to much on
direct relief and used New Deal
policies to socialize the economy
Senator Huey Long
At first a supporter he later
turned against the New Deal and
Roosevelt
He was later assassinated by a
lone gunman at the height of his
popularity
9. THE SECOND NEW DEAL
Dorothea Lange
Documented American life during the
1930’s
After two years in office
unemployment was still high and
production lagged
Roosevelt launched a second burst of
activity
Roosevelt was continually urged by
his wife Eleanor to help people
suffering throughout the nation

Roosevelt won in a landslide victory
