1. Best Yoga classes provide by ashtangayogaedmonton.com
We are a dedicated Ashtanga Yoga studio located in the heart of downtown
Edmonton. We offer traditional Mysore style classes, Led and Intro classes under
the guidance of Alberta’s only Authorized Ashtanga teacher, Evan Gavigan, and
Catherine Kovacs, both direct students of R. Sharath Jois and Ashtanga
practitioners for over a decade.
We are committed to teaching in a smaller group environment where students learn
the techniques and philosophy of the Ashtanga Yoga System in a safe and
supportive setting. ALL practitioners welcome!
It is with humbleness that we pass on the teachings of the Sri T.Krishnamacharya
lineage, through his direct student of more than three decades, Sri K. Patthabi Jois,
and grandson R.Sharath José, our teacher.
In December 2010, Sharath granted Evan Authorization to teach Ashtanga Yoga,
an honour given to experienced and dedicated practitioners who have shown an
appreciation of the method, and who continue to study regularly at the KPJAYI
(Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute) in Mysore, India. During the month
of January 2012, Evan had the opportunity to directly assist Sharath in the practice
room, an invaluable experience and honour. We are both dedicated to continue this
lineage of teaching, and travel yearly to the KPJAYI in order to practice and study
under Sharath’s guidance.
2. Ashtanga Yoga studio Practice
A component of Ashtanga (eight limbs) Yoga is the vinyasa system; vinyasa
meaning breathing and movement system where breath, movement and awareness
are bound together. For each movement there is one breath. When awareness and
breath are integrated into the action of moving the body, purifying heat is created.
The purpose of vinyasa is to cleanse and purify the body. The Ashtanga Yoga
Primary Series is called “yoga chikitsa”, or yoga therapy, and is designed to purify
and restore balance to the entire body by eliminating toxins in the blood and organs
through sweat.
