4. Day 1
Anticipation filled our thoughts as we took in the sight of our new
home, Malibu, California. The airplane attendant helped us lug our
suitcases into the back of our rental car. I slipped into the driver’s
seat and had Brenna direct the way to our hotel, as Michelle napped
in the back.
Hours later, we arrived at our two bedroom hotel and checked
in. Michelle took to the couch immediately, which relieved Brenna
and me. The view outside our window was breathtaking, as we saw
the famous Malibu Pier and couldn’t wait for our scheduled day
there. We began unloading our luggage into our temporary home to
make it seem more welcome. After our surprisingly exhausting
afternoon everyone went for a long, deep snooze.
5. Day 1
As we awoke from our restful nap, we all prepared for our
sight-seeing stroll around Malibu. First, we headed toward the
downtown part of Malibu, where many pedestrians shop and
converse. I parked our car near a car meter for half an hour so we
could walk around the shopping centers and see what their
merchandise was. We all ended up buying swimsuits for our day at
the beach.
Our stomachs started to growl and we knew just the place to
eat: Dukes Malibu. We heard it was a spectacular venue. When we
got there we had an option of dining inside or out on the balcony. It
was a beautiful evening out and the breeze made the weather even
greater. Michelle ordered Clay Pot Chicken, Brenna ordered Spicy
Sugar Cane Shrimp and I, Sashimi. The foods at Dukes Malibu
where known to represent Malibu’s essence.
Back at the hotel, I slept with this picture, of
togetherness and family, in my head.
6. Day 2
It was an early morning at our hotel. We had to prepare for the
long trek ahead of us. We made the sandwiches. Nour had bought
ingredients for them and we packed plenty of water before we
headed to the mountains. When we arrived at the toll booth, and
paid, we had to find a parking spot. Once we did, we pulled on our
packs and started toward the base of the mountains to start our
hike. At first it was pretty easy going, but as the altitude and slope
increased, our effort did too. We took a break to rehydrate
ourselves and to catch our breath at a beautiful cliff overlooking the
other mountains. We decided to take pictures of nature and
ourselves here, and then move on.
7. Day 2
Finally we arrived at the reflecting pools and waterfalls. There
we unpacked our sandwiches and blankets to lie on. It was so
refreshing after the two hour hike. The sun was sliding down the
sky, so we packed up and started back down the mountain. Dinner
was reserved at Thai Sky and I was pretty excited. When we
walked in the smell of curry and spices invaded my mouth and nose.
I ordered Green Curry with Chicken and had Mango Sticky Rice for
dessert. It was the sweetest I have ever had, and the perfect way to
end the day!
8. Day 3
As we rose, along with the sun, we quickly shoved on our clothes. The
day had come that I was anticipating the most. We rushed in the car, as
Nour slammed on the gas, for we knew the Double Dolphin was awaiting
our arrival. The Double Dolphin is a ship in which multiple passengers join
together to receive the amazing joy of watching whales, sea lions, and
dolphins in their natural habitat. The entire day was going to be filled with
the excitement and thrills of the sea.
An hour after we had left the hotel, we were ushered onto the ship,
where our brunch was already on the table waiting for us. The brunch
menu included an incredible ham and cheese omelet. After our plates were
clean, and we were nice and full, we took our seats and were ready for the
show to start. The second we sat down, an explosion of dolphins flew out
of the water. As they gracefully fell back into the water, we were almost
drowned with salty sea water. As we kept traveling, farther and farther
away from our temporary home, we had the most amazing view of a great
humpback whale.
9. Day 3
We were starting to get hungry so the crew decided it was time
for dinner. The meal was an amazing grilled chicken. When we were
done with our meal, our time had come to an end. Just as we were
sailing back to our port, there was a gorgeous sunset right behind
us. The sun was reflecting off the water as if saying “goodbye.” Right
as we docked, we saw a gorgeous sea lion perched on a rock. Let
me tell you, this day could not be replicated. The ride back to our
hotel was long and hard. The ride on our ship was incredible, but
somewhere between the sunburns and stopping for what seemed
like hours for gas, it was miserable. Either way, it was a great day
and we hope to do it again soon.
10. Day 4
What a better way to spend our 4th day in Malibu than to visit
the Malibu Pier. The sun was up and welcoming that day. As we
dug our feet into the warm sand and let the suns heat bathe on our
faces, we got lost in our own thoughts. Suddenly the salty scent of
the ocean breeze, reminded me of where I was standing. I caught
up with Brenna and Michelle on our quest to find an accessible spot.
Michelle located a great open layout to set up our beach towels and
umbrella. I dabbed sunscreen onto myself before I got into the
lapping waves of the ocean. We decided on getting ourselves a
mini-tan and some food before we headed into the warm Malibu
water. Michelle had prepared us tuna sandwiches and a variety of
chips. Before we ended up with a sunburn, Brenna, Michelle and I
immediately start sprinting toward the water and swam as far as we
could. Brenna, the most competitive one, decided to swim out
deeper than the rest of us near the shark infested waters. Minutes
later, Brenna came wailing back, trying to convince us that a shark
had run against her leg. Michelle and I cracked up at the sound of it
and headed back onto the shore with Brenna trailing behind.
11. Day 4
As we step off the pier, our mouths’ shapes dropped into a
perfect “O”. The whimsical theme had us all in awe. Our first step
was to find a food shack. Soon enough our stomachs were going to
cause an earthquake. A fellow pedestrian showed us a quick and
easy hamburger joint nearby. We ordered three Malibu style
burgers with our choice of condiments. After we devoured our
enormous burgers, we decided to take a stroll on the pier and play
some games here and there. I ended up with the most souvenirs
from all the ball games we had attempted today, but I decided to
give some to Brenna and Michelle. The day was coming to a close,
so we headed on our last walk today on the beach. As we were
doing so I spotted 3 dolphins headed out of the water together.
Brenna, Michelle and I all looked at one another and knew that we
would never forget this beautiful day.
12. Day 5
The sun perched on the fluffs of clouds, tinting the sky all shades
of pink, yellow, and orange. The ground smelled of grass, work, and
manure. We practically ran to the group of horses that we would pick
from to ride the trails on. Nour picked a hazelnut colored horse, Brenna
the white one with black speckles, and I picked a black one with a white
diamond on its head. They seemed to have wonderful personalities.
Then we were finally off!
The rhythmic trot of the horses was therapeutic. Our trainer told us
our balance was pretty good for beginners, while everyone was
swooning over how beautiful our horses were. They whinnied and
snuffed in response. Our day was speeding by much too quickly, and
soon our trainer made the comment that it was getting late, and how we
should start heading back. We all gave each other a look that said that
could NOT have been 2 hours! But we grudgingly followed anyway
because our stomachs are complaining loudly.
13. Day 5
Lunch was at Neptune’s Net. My turkey sandwich with potato salad
was refreshing. We decided to have a beach afternoon, which had to be
the best decision we could have made. For part of the time we lay out in
the sun, the other part we played some beach volley ball (which none of
us were very good at) and snorkeled. We also found some shells and
things. About 5:30, we decided we should head in to get ready for dinner
at the Sunset Restaurant.
The view from this place was amazing! My salad was crisp and very
flavorful. When we had all finished, we headed over to the window to
watch for whales, though I doubted we would see them. Much to my
surprise, just as the sun rested on the water’s surface, a lone whale leapt
out of the water and flipped to show his stomach right before he
disappeared into the water with a splash. This night’s sleep was peaceful.
14. Day 6
As we wearily got out of bed, dreading that this day would
come, we started to pack. Our flight did not leave until 2 p.m., so we
still had a little while before we left. As we finished packing we
shoved all of our luggage into our car and we headed for the beach
for the last time.
We pulled into the parking lot of the beach, grabbed our chairs
and headed down for the waves. The noise of the birds and the
smell of the salty water were memories that all three of us would
never forget. After a while of just relaxing, we went and splashed
around in the ocean. Somehow we managed to not get our hair wet,
no matter how much we scooted about.
15. Day 6
When the time had come, we packed up our things and headed for
our ride home. It was 12 p.m. and was time to return our car to the
rental shop. After our return, we slugged into the airport, checked our
bags, and went through security to go to the food court to eat. After our
delicious meal of Wendy’s, we marched down to our gate and claimed
our seats until our group to load the plane was called. We had our
tickets checked and went to shake the pilots hand before taking our
seats. As the light came on for us to put our seatbelts on, we took one
last look out at Malibu before we returned to real life. Right before we
took off, we all said that we would return again someday. The
stewardess came around time after time and offered multiple goodies,
which were all good, but none as good as any of the food we had in
Malibu. Those were some of the best experiences of our lives and we
would never forget any of them.
