Median Mean Mode Excel 2007
1. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
This PowerPoint shows how to find the
Mean, Media, Mode, Maximum, and Minimum values.
It includes how to do these stats using Microsoft
Excel 2007.
2. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MEAN (Mathematically Evaluated Average Number)
We add up all the items, then divide by how many
items we have. Mean = Total / How Many
Example 1. Two dice were thrown 10 times. For each
throw their scores were added together and recorded.
Find the mean and range for this data.
7, 5, 2, 7, 6, 12, 10, 4, 8, 9
Mean = 7 + 5 + 2 + 7 + 6 + 12 + 10 + 4 + 8 + 9
10
= 70 = 7
10
( Range = Max – Min = 12 – 2 = 10 )
3. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MEAN using Excel 2007
We type our items into Excel, and then type in the
formula =average(start cell : end cell) like this:
When we press
enter, we get correct
value of Mean
Average = 7
4. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MEAN (longer way) using Excel 2007
We use =sum for Total, then =Count for number of
items. We then divide total by count to get the MEAN.
=AVERAGE(B3:B12)
does the same thing
using one formula.
5. Averages (The MEDIAN)
The median is the middle value of a set of data after
the data has been ordered from lowest to highest.
Example 1. Michael hit 11 balls at Hillside driving
range. The recorded distances of his drives, measured
in meters, are given below. Find the median distance
for his drives.
85, 125, 130, 65, 100, 70, 75, 50, 140, 95, 70
50, 65, 70, 70, 75, 85, 95, 100, 125, 130, 140
Single middle value Ordered data
Median drive = 85 meters

6. Averages (The Median)
The Median is the middle value of a set of data after
the data has been ordered from lowest to highest.
Example 1. Michael hit 12 balls at Churchill driving
range. The recorded distances of his drives, measured in
meters, are given below. Find the median distance for his
drives.
85, 125, 130, 65, 100, 70, 75, 50, 140, 135, 95, 70
50, 65, 70, 70, 75, 85, 95, 100, 125, 130, 135, 140
Two middle values, so Ordered data
Add & Divide by 2.
Median drive = (85+95) / 2 = 90 meters
7. Averages (The MEDIAN by Position)
The median can also be found at position (N+1)/2 in the
ordered data, where N = the total number of items.
Example 1. Michael hit 11 balls at Hillside driving range.
The distances have been put into ascending order.
The Median should be at position (11+1) /2 = the 6th item.
Odd number of total items produces one item in the middle.
50, 65, 70, 70, 75, 85, 95, 100, 125, 130, 140
The 6th item Ordered data
Median drive = 85 meters

8. Averages (The MEDIAN by Position)
The median can also be found at position (N+1)/2 in the
ordered data, where N = the total number of items.
Example 1. Michael hit 12 balls at Hillside driving range.
The distances have been put into ascending order.
The Median should be at position (12+1) /2 = the 6.5th item.
Even number of total items produces two items in the middle.
50, 65, 70, 70, 75, 85, 95, 100, 125, 130, 135, 140
The 6.5th item is in between 85 and 95
Median drive = (85+95) / 2 = 90 meters

9. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MEDIAN using Excel 2007
We type our items into Excel, and then use the
formula =median(start cell : end cell) like this:
When we press
enter, we get correct
value of MEDIAN= 90
10. Averages (The MODE)
The MODE is the value that we have most of after
the data has been ordered from lowest to highest.
Example. Tayla slept for 12 nights while on holidays.
Her nightly hours of sleep are given below. Find the Mode.
8, 10, 8, 12, 7, 8, 6, 7, 8, 9, 8, 10
6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10, 12
There are more 8’s Ordered data
than any other value.
MODE hours of sleep = 8 hours
11. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MODE using Excel 2007
We type our items into Excel, and then use the
formula =mode(start cell : end cell) like this:
When we press
enter, we get correct
value of MODE = 8
12. Mean, Median, Mode, Max, Min (Including Excel 2007) .
Finding the MAX and MIN using Excel 2007
We type our items into Excel, and then use the
formula =max(start cell : end cell) like this:
When we press
enter, Excel locates
the maximum value
of12
