2. I AM
WHO I AM
No, not Popeye, but definitely an individual with character. This is
a sample of my work. Most portfolios show you work but tell you
nothing of the person behind it. Although compelling, they are an
incomplete story; a picture book with a theme but no soul.
It’s not a long story. After all, you get a feel for someone pretty quick.
Take a moment to see the kind of work I am proud of and, just as
importantly, find out a little about who I am.
3. I AM
A MOSSY COVERED BUCKEYE
I was raised in the Midwest and transplanted to the West Coast long
enough ago to be considered a native. Family, friends, mentors and
experience have taught me to work hard and enjoy life.
I’ve been creating ever since I was born. From crayon on the walls,
through art classes in high school and college, to design director for
Hornall Anderson, I live for creativity.
4. I AM
FULL OF IT
I’ve worked on a ranch, flipped burgers, and tended bar, so I can
pour a mean drink. I coach soccer and play regularly to practice what
I preach. I love to build stuff. I enjoy hitting the links now and then in
spite of a wicked slice. Give me a muddy trail and my mountain bike
and I’m in hog heaven. I’ve seen a smidgen of the globe and look
forward to seeing more.
I’ve started a business or three, won awards, suffered defeats and
experienced the ups and downs of life. The world is the inspiration
for my ideas. This is the foundation of who I am.
5. I AM
A HYBRID
In the last 20 years, I’ve gone from Art Director to Design Director. My
career began in 1989 when I met my first business partner, Dan Fine.
We started an ad agency around the efficiencies of desktop publishing
and grew as quickly as the technology changed. I became a self-taught
desktop wiz, and spent 8 years growing our small shop into a solid
mid-sized firm.
I moved on to become creative director at BD&A, a large merchandising
agency, turning their inhouse art department into a profit center.
Looking for more creative challenges, I went out on my own, developing
ads and designs for multiple agencies and clients.
6. I AM
A PROBLEM SOLVER
While I was doing my own thing as Bruce Advertising & Design,
I stumbled into a short term gig for Hornall Anderson. Three days
turned into two weeks — two weeks turned into three months and
next thing I knew they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. In my
interview with Jack Anderson I had to ask how I, as an ad guy,
not a designer, fit into the mix? His answer, “We have lots of great
decorators, we want you because you’re a thinker.”
But enough about who I am. It’s time to see some of the solutions
to the problems I’ve helped solve in recent years.
