Welcome to the war on terrorism story, where journalists have
faced two options: travel solo into a region so lawless and
dangerous that eight journalists were killed over the course of
17 days in November (more fatalities than the U.S. military had
suffered up to that point), or play by the rules of a Pentagon
determined to delay and limit access to the conflict.
Nina Easton, American Journalism Review, March 2002

I think it’s just unspeakable what the military is doing to
journalists in the Afghan conflict. I don’t believe any meaningful
reporting has come out of the U.S. military, vis-à-vis its war in
Afghanistan. None. None!
Christiane Amanpour, Proceedings, April 2002

More so than during any major war in American history,
journalists here have been left to their own devices, left literally
and figuratively to take their chances in freezing cars outside
the protection of the U.S. military cocoon.

This is some weird stuff, quot; joked an

quot; Some guy in jeans and a beard comes
up to me and hands me a scrap of paper
with grid coordinates scrawled on it and
says, `Here, go kill this target.' And I go,
`Who are you?' And he says, `Billy.' And
            I go, „All right!‟
In truth, requests for close air
support and other protective fire are
            meticulously cross-checked with the
entire staff and with units in the field.

U.S. Forces Kill 5 In An Afghan Raid That Raises
    Doubts
By Carlotta Gall with Eric Schmitt, New York Times, May 14, 2002

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, May 13 — American Special
Operations forces killed five people suspected of being fighters for Al
Qaeda or the Taliban and captured 32 others in a night raid in southern
Afghanistan on Sunday, military officials said today.
No Americans were injured in the clash 50 miles north of Kandahar, in
Oruzgan Province. But almost immediately some officials raised doubts
about the operation, and American officials acknowledged that the initial
questioning of those detained brought up no immediate indications that
the captives were Taliban or Qaeda fighters.

  • 11. Welcome to the war on terrorism story, where journalists have faced two options: travel solo into a region so lawless and dangerous that eight journalists were killed over the course of 17 days in November (more fatalities than the U.S. military had suffered up to that point), or play by the rules of a Pentagon determined to delay and limit access to the conflict. Nina Easton, American Journalism Review, March 2002 I think it’s just unspeakable what the military is doing to journalists in the Afghan conflict. I don’t believe any meaningful reporting has come out of the U.S. military, vis-à-vis its war in Afghanistan. None. None! Christiane Amanpour, Proceedings, April 2002 More so than during any major war in American history, journalists here have been left to their own devices, left literally and figuratively to take their chances in freezing cars outside the protection of the U.S. military cocoon. OGAs etc. This is some weird stuff, quot; joked an Army officer who coordinates air strikes. quot; Some guy in jeans and a beard comes up to me and hands me a scrap of paper with grid coordinates scrawled on it and says, `Here, go kill this target.' And I go, `Who are you?' And he says, `Billy.' And I go, „All right!‟ In truth, requests for close air support and other protective fire are meticulously cross-checked with the entire staff and with units in the field. 5/12/2009 22

U.S. Forces Kill 5 In An Afghan Raid That Raises Doubts By Carlotta Gall with Eric Schmitt, New York Times, May 14, 2002 BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, May 13 — American Special Operations forces killed five people suspected of being fighters for Al Qaeda or the Taliban and captured 32 others in a night raid in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, military officials said today. No Americans were injured in the clash 50 miles north of Kandahar, in Oruzgan Province. But almost immediately some officials raised doubts about the operation, and American officials acknowledged that the initial questioning of those detained brought up no immediate indications that the captives were Taliban or Qaeda fighters. quot;So far we haven't found anyone of great interest in this group, quot; a senior military official said. quot;If they prove not to be bad guys, and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, we'll release them.quot; 5/12/2009 36
