2. Nouns
A person, place, thing, or idea.
Person: boy, girl, man, woman
Place: America, Oregon, Keizer, Weddle, home
Thing: house, table, desk, pencil
Idea: justice, liberty, freedom

3. Verbs
Shows action or a state of behavior.
Examples:
working running playing jumping

4. Adjectives
Describes a noun or pronoun.
The small boat foundered on the wine dark sea.
The coal mines are dark and dank.
The back room was filled with large, yellow rain boots.
A battered music box sat on the mahogany sideboard.

5. Adverb
Modifies a verb
Adverbs of manner describe how something happens.

Adverbs of purpose describe why something happens.

Adverbs of frequency describe how often something happens.

6. Article
Those little words that precede and modify nouns.

Sometimes these words will tell you whether it is a specific or general thing

Links to nouns, pronouns, and phrases
A preposition shows the relationship of its object to
the rest of the sentence.
The book is on the table.
The books are book is leaning against the wall.
The book is beside the table.
She held the book over the table.
She read the book during class.

8. Conjunction
Linking words, phrases, and clauses
"and" "but" "or" "nor" "for" "so" "yet"
I ate the pizza and the pasta.
Call the movers when you are ready.

9. Contractions
A combination of two words and shortening the words by
replacing a one or two letters with an apostrophe.
