domestic use for the community.
INTRODUCTION
Beroya Water and Sanitation Health Education Development
is a program initiated by Beroya Gospel Fellowship to
reach out to local communities of Uganda in view of
improving sanitation.
The program has two major components namely;
2.0.1 Creating sources of safe water
This will be done by drilling shallow wells using the
hydra-drill machine.
2.0.2 Sanitation Health Education
To educate communities on personal hygiene, safe water
and other related health issues as a way of promoting
quality of life.
3.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Beroya Gospel fellowship is a Charity Non-Government
Faith Based Organization in Uganda, registered by the
Ministry of Internal affairs under registration number S.
5914/1085. The organization has been in operation since
early 1995. To date the Organization has established 12
local churches in rural communities in the districts of
Jinja, Iganga, Kamuli and Namutumba. Basing on the water
situation straining the rural communities in Uganda,
Beroya Gospel Fellowship initiated a Water and Sanitation
Health Education Development program to ensure
accessibility of safe water supply and dissemination of
Health Education to the community.
The main source of funding has been income raised from
collections from offerings and tithes in the church and
donations from individual partners. The money enabled the
organization to take a survey which has been a major tool
in data collection.
The Organization is now seeking social-economic support
to be able to start on the implementation phase.
4.0 SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS / PROJECT AREA
The pilot project area shall be Magada sub-county in
Namutumba District.
Magada sub-county is the most water stressed area in the
Six sub county of Namutumba district. The sub-county is
made up of 12 parishes with a total population of 60,653
people. There are 56 safe water sources out of the
minimum requirement of 174 sources of water. This
indicates that, there are 1083 people sharing a source of
safe water and moving an average distance of 2km to the
water source. The National standard policy requires that
at most 350 people share one source of water at a walk
able distance of 1.5 km.
The statistics from the community leaders and members
revealed 28.3% safe water coverage which is very low
compared to the population of the area.
The current available sources of water include;
Boreholes- 32%
Springs- 00%
Spots of dry valleys - 5%
Hand dug wells- 3%
Swamps- 60%
The majority of the people get water from swamps which
are often contaminated near the shores due to domestic
activities, stirring by waves, human/animal activities
and the seasonality of the valleys that serve as rice
fields.
Properly protected boreholes are highly regarded to
produce safe water but the existing boreholes are poorly
located and give a low yield and no yield during the long
drought spells. The high rate of failure for under ground
water development in the area is attributed to the
presence of the hard impenetrable basement rock. With the
intervention of BE-WASHED in the year 2008/2009, we
commit to raise the water coverage from 28.3% to 73.6%.
The district status report 2006 indicated sanitation
(latrine) coverage at 43.2% and only 15% of the
population use them regularly.
Discussions with the district water officer revealed that
there is indiscriminate practice of open defecation
especially in valleys and around pit latrines and sharing
of pit latrines among homesteads. The majority of the
latrine super-structures have temporary walls made of
banana leaves and floors lined with logs thus posing a
potential danger to the users. Children’s fences are not
regarded as a dangerous source of contamination and left
to decompose on the ground breeding a major source of
fecal routes.
The culture and practice of hand washing after visiting
latrines and after handling children’s fences is totally
non-prevalent owing to no prior health education and
shortage of water. There is no initiative for
construction of hand washing facilities therefore a
possibility of secondary contamination of food and water
with fecal materials. This partly explains high
incidences of gastro-enteritis diseases namely diarrhea
and vomiting at 70% occurrence.
Efforts to improve hygiene and sanitation have proved
difficult due to natural calamities like termites that
hinder the usage of logs for floors; the situation is
made worst because of the poor soil stratum consisting of
mainly sandy formation, making it difficult to excavate
pits for latrine construction. BE-WASHED’S target is to
change the attitude of the community members towards
latrine use from 15% to 59% by giving them health
education and encourage them to improve on their
sanitation and personal hygiene.
5.0 GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
5.1 GOAL
BE-WASHED is committed to improve sanitation, Health and
quality of life of the rural disadvantaged people in
Busiki constituency.
5.2 OBJECTIVES
To achieve the stated goal in the long run BE-WASHED will
under take the following objectives;
5.2.1 Provision of clean, safe water to households
through construction of shallow wells.
5.2.2 Organize capacity building sessions for the
community members so as to establish community based
maintenance systems for effective management and
sustainability of the water facilities.
5.2.3 Promotion of the best operational practices in
sanitation and hygiene.
5.2.4 Train the selected members on how to drill wells.
5.2.5 Enhance community participation in the construction
of water sources
5.2.6 Conduct home improvement campaigns to foster change
in hygiene behavior.
5.2.7 Create increased quantity of safe drinking water at
household level.
6.0 PROJECT INTERVENTION
6.1 The proposed activity shall be taken on as a means of
creating water supply for safe water for drinking and
domestic use for the community.
A hydra-drill machine has been purchased to help in
drilling shallow wells. The machine is very economical,
saves time and man-power, with its Honda Gasoline Engine
(707 EX commercial). The machine has the capacity to
drill a depth of 90 meters at drill hand rotation of
144r.p.m. the machine is portable and can be handled
/operated by few trained staff. The machine has been
accessed from U.S.A in a Company called DEEP ROCK.
In Uganda wells are hand dug and it takes a lot of time
and man-power to complete a well of 60ft. A hydra-drill
machine would be a suitable alternative for well
construction.
The project will first drill 1 well to serve as
demonstration systems in Namutumba district. After which
the BE-WASHED TEAM will drill a total of 25 wells at
already identified sites by Hon.Mukose Musa Mutabali area
Member of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda.
PROJECT INPUTS:
1. 5 STAFFS AND 7 MAN POWER.
2. DRILLING EQUIPEMENT.
3. BUILDING MATERIALS AND WATER INSTALLATION TOOLS.
4. TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION.
5. FACILITATION FEES.
STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION PLAN:
1. Mobilizations will be taking place in Jan /2008
...
2. Educating the communities about the program, Jan/2008.
3. Lobbying community participation will be identified, Jan/2008.
4. Site survey, Feb/2008.
5. Main activity of drilling process will follow and water development and installation FEB/2008.
6. Function of handing over the finished water source will be done in March/2008.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION:
Monitoring and evaluation will be carried out by the working staff of the BE-WASHED who will
give reports to the board of Beroya Gospel Fellowship. LATER the report will be submitted to
relevant offices and donors for justification of the program.
PROJECT IMPACT:
The project has cause a great impact in Buteme village where we began our first drilling process.
We have been not having water since we were borne in the village, but today God has answered our
prayers this was said by one member who is a counselor to the sub county of kisozi, Kumuli district.
There is water clean and pure to be used in their families.
The church members and all the communities’ members gave thanks and now they are responsible with
their borehole.
Your support to this program will cause more to have peace, joy and good health for the young
generation when they use good water from good sources.
BUDGET FOR ONE BOREHOLE:
A. Mobilization, education and administration costs = 1,000, 000/=
B. up keep for the 5 staffs X 400, 000/= per month = 2,000, 000/=
C. 7 Pp for man power. X 200, 000/= per month = 1,400.000/=
Sub total = 4,400,000/=
D. ONE Deep well development
(Water site survey, Drilling, Well development, Pump testing
Water quality analysis, Casting Supply and Installation of the complete
Water pump, V.A.T (Value Added Tax 18%). = 19,000,000/=
Ground Total: = 23,400,000/=
Local contribution = 3,500,000/=
Project fund needed. = 19,900,000/=
Future Plan:
After the first site then, we shall continue with the activities to drill 25 boreholes in this district and
well as educating the communities about the preventable methods of health.

PROPOSED ACTIVITY: Creating sources of safe water supply for drinking and domestic use for the community.
  • 3. INTRODUCTION Beroya Water and Sanitation Health Education Development is a program initiated by Beroya Gospel Fellowship to reach out to local communities of Uganda in view of improving sanitation. The program has two major components namely; 2.0.1 Creating sources of safe water This will be done by drilling shallow wells using the hydra-drill machine. 2.0.2 Sanitation Health Education To educate communities on personal hygiene, safe water and other related health issues as a way of promoting quality of life. 3.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Beroya Gospel fellowship is a Charity Non-Government Faith Based Organization in Uganda, registered by the Ministry of Internal affairs under registration number S. 5914/1085. The organization has been in operation since early 1995. To date the Organization has established 12 local churches in rural communities in the districts of Jinja, Iganga, Kamuli and Namutumba. Basing on the water situation straining the rural communities in Uganda, Beroya Gospel Fellowship initiated a Water and Sanitation Health Education Development program to ensure accessibility of safe water supply and dissemination of Health Education to the community. The main source of funding has been income raised from collections from offerings and tithes in the church and donations from individual partners. The money enabled the organization to take a survey which has been a major tool in data collection. The Organization is now seeking social-economic support to be able to start on the implementation phase. 4.0 SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS / PROJECT AREA The pilot project area shall be Magada sub-county in Namutumba District. Magada sub-county is the most water stressed area in the Six sub county of Namutumba district. The sub-county is made up of 12 parishes with a total population of 60,653 people. There are 56 safe water sources out of the minimum requirement of 174 sources of water. This
  • 4. indicates that, there are 1083 people sharing a source of safe water and moving an average distance of 2km to the water source. The National standard policy requires that at most 350 people share one source of water at a walk able distance of 1.5 km. The statistics from the community leaders and members revealed 28.3% safe water coverage which is very low compared to the population of the area. The current available sources of water include; Boreholes- 32% Springs- 00% Spots of dry valleys - 5% Hand dug wells- 3% Swamps- 60% The majority of the people get water from swamps which are often contaminated near the shores due to domestic activities, stirring by waves, human/animal activities and the seasonality of the valleys that serve as rice fields. Properly protected boreholes are highly regarded to produce safe water but the existing boreholes are poorly located and give a low yield and no yield during the long drought spells. The high rate of failure for under ground water development in the area is attributed to the presence of the hard impenetrable basement rock. With the intervention of BE-WASHED in the year 2008/2009, we commit to raise the water coverage from 28.3% to 73.6%. The district status report 2006 indicated sanitation (latrine) coverage at 43.2% and only 15% of the population use them regularly. Discussions with the district water officer revealed that there is indiscriminate practice of open defecation especially in valleys and around pit latrines and sharing of pit latrines among homesteads. The majority of the latrine super-structures have temporary walls made of banana leaves and floors lined with logs thus posing a potential danger to the users. Children’s fences are not regarded as a dangerous source of contamination and left to decompose on the ground breeding a major source of fecal routes. The culture and practice of hand washing after visiting latrines and after handling children’s fences is totally non-prevalent owing to no prior health education and shortage of water. There is no initiative for construction of hand washing facilities therefore a possibility of secondary contamination of food and water with fecal materials. This partly explains high incidences of gastro-enteritis diseases namely diarrhea and vomiting at 70% occurrence.
  • 5. Efforts to improve hygiene and sanitation have proved difficult due to natural calamities like termites that hinder the usage of logs for floors; the situation is made worst because of the poor soil stratum consisting of mainly sandy formation, making it difficult to excavate pits for latrine construction. BE-WASHED’S target is to change the attitude of the community members towards latrine use from 15% to 59% by giving them health education and encourage them to improve on their sanitation and personal hygiene. 5.0 GOAL AND OBJECTIVES 5.1 GOAL BE-WASHED is committed to improve sanitation, Health and quality of life of the rural disadvantaged people in Busiki constituency. 5.2 OBJECTIVES To achieve the stated goal in the long run BE-WASHED will under take the following objectives; 5.2.1 Provision of clean, safe water to households through construction of shallow wells. 5.2.2 Organize capacity building sessions for the community members so as to establish community based maintenance systems for effective management and sustainability of the water facilities. 5.2.3 Promotion of the best operational practices in sanitation and hygiene. 5.2.4 Train the selected members on how to drill wells. 5.2.5 Enhance community participation in the construction of water sources 5.2.6 Conduct home improvement campaigns to foster change in hygiene behavior. 5.2.7 Create increased quantity of safe drinking water at household level. 6.0 PROJECT INTERVENTION
  • 6. 6.1 The proposed activity shall be taken on as a means of creating water supply for safe water for drinking and domestic use for the community. A hydra-drill machine has been purchased to help in drilling shallow wells. The machine is very economical, saves time and man-power, with its Honda Gasoline Engine (707 EX commercial). The machine has the capacity to drill a depth of 90 meters at drill hand rotation of 144r.p.m. the machine is portable and can be handled /operated by few trained staff. The machine has been accessed from U.S.A in a Company called DEEP ROCK. In Uganda wells are hand dug and it takes a lot of time and man-power to complete a well of 60ft. A hydra-drill machine would be a suitable alternative for well construction. The project will first drill 1 well to serve as demonstration systems in Namutumba district. After which the BE-WASHED TEAM will drill a total of 25 wells at already identified sites by Hon.Mukose Musa Mutabali area Member of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. PROJECT INPUTS: 1. 5 STAFFS AND 7 MAN POWER. 2. DRILLING EQUIPEMENT. 3. BUILDING MATERIALS AND WATER INSTALLATION TOOLS. 4. TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION. 5. FACILITATION FEES. STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION PLAN: 1. Mobilizations will be taking place in Jan /2008 ... MONITORING AND EVALUATION: Monitoring and evaluation will be carried out by the working staff of the BE-WASHED who will give reports to the board of Beroya Gospel Fellowship. LATER the report will be submitted to relevant offices and donors for justification of the program.
  • 7. PROJECT IMPACT: The project has cause a great impact in Buteme village where we began our first drilling process. We have been not having water since we were borne in the village, but today God has answered our prayers this was said by one member who is a counselor to the sub county of kisozi, Kumuli district. There is water clean and pure to be used in their families. The church members and all the communities’ members gave thanks and now they are responsible with their borehole. Your support to this program will cause more to have peace, joy and good health for the young generation when they use good water from good sources. BUDGET FOR ONE BOREHOLE: A. Mobilization, education and administration costs = 1,000, 000/= B. up keep for the 5 staffs X 400, 000/= per month = 2,000, 000/= C. 7 Pp for man power. X 200, 000/= per month = 1,400.000/= Sub total = 4,400,000/= D. ONE Deep well development (Water site survey, Drilling, Well development, Pump testing Water quality analysis, Casting Supply and Installation of the complete Water pump, V.A.T (Value Added Tax 18%). = 19,000,000/= Ground Total: = 23,400,000/= Local contribution = 3,500,000/= Project fund needed. = 19,900,000/= Future Plan: After the first site then, we shall continue with the activities to drill 25 boreholes in this district and well as educating the communities about the preventable methods of health. Appendix: This was during the time we were at Buteme Village drilling the source of water in Kamuli district .
