skills.

"On Monday, 10/28, we held the “Human Library” event at the New York City campus, in
collaboration with Student Development, as part of Information Literacy Month. Eight students
and four staff members (including Bernadette, Matthew, and Bill) served as “books” that the
audience could “check out” for brief discussions. Each volunteer wore a book-shaped greeting
label that identified one aspect of their identity, such as “I am a vegetarian,” “I am tattooed,” or
“I am a minority.” The event started with a discussion about the importance of seeing
information in context, and the need to understand the person behind each source of
information (even if that source is an interview, tweet, or academic article.) An iClicker activity
asked students to identify unusual facts about celebrities, to spark discussion of how little we
may know about people without research or direct interaction. After a brief introduction from
Adam Rosen in the counseling department about the importance of celebrating each other’s
differences, the audience members were given discussion questions and encouraged to find out
more about the volunteers, with the goal of overcoming their misconceptions based on the label
and learning more about the person’s identity. A total of approximately 25 students attended
and participated."
