The Clearwater Region is one of the most productive fishing areas in
the state, boasting more than a dozen species of game fish. It is also one
of the most primitive. Lewis and Clark traveled through this area on their
Voyage of Discovery and much of the land remains nearly as primitive
today as it was in the early 1800s.
The major drainage is the Clearwater River and it drains an area of
25,000 square miles from the northeast corner of the region, near the
Montana border, south to the north side of the Salmon River in the Frank
Church River of No Return Wilderness area. The region also includes part
of the Snake River downstream of Hells Canyon Dam and the Salmon
River downstream of Riggins. For most of the way across the interior of
the state, the north shore of the Main Salmon River acts as the region’s
southern boundary.
There are several world-famous trout streams in the Clearwater
Region. North Fork Clearwater, Kelly Creek and the Lochsa and Selway
rivers are spread across this wilderness drainage with their headwaters high
in the forestlands of the Bitterroot Mountains. These streams alone would
make a trip to the region worthwhile.
Part of the Selway, and bits and pieces of the Lochsa and South Fork
Clearwater rivers, run through rugged areas. The Lochsa and the Selway
meet near Lowell and they form the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River
and are part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. There are still
some areas here where man has had little impact. Some roadless areas,
though exceedingly rugged, are not designated wilderness.
But progress has taken its toll, even in the Clearwater Region. The
building of the Dworshak (Northfork Clearwater River) and Hells Canyon
(Snake River) dams eliminated natural production of steelhead and salmon
above these dams as they have no fish-passage capacity. The Salmon and
Snake river sections in the Clearwater Region are migration corridors for
chinook salmon and steelhead spawners. Other dams on the Columbia
and Snake rivers have had negative impacts on the fishery to the extent
that these fisheries are maintained with an aggressive stocking program to
supplement returning wild fish. Still, anadromous fisheries in the Clear-

So whatever your choice, from spin-casting for bass, dock-fishing for
bluegill with a bobber and worm, fly-fishing for trout or salmon, or hiking to

The Palouse River FFW
From the Washington border to its headwaters in the St. Joe National
Forest, including tributaries, there are 70 miles of Palouse River in the state.
Closer to the Washington border, it is a mixed fishery, stocked with catch-
able rainbow trout. Other species include brook trout and smallmouth bass.
Upstream, the water is prone to low levels late in the season. The
upstream waters are also the most pristine in the drainage, with numerous
area campsites. Catchable rainbow trout are stocked in the Laird Park area
in the spring. Laird Park has large camping (28 sites) and picnic areas and
it is located on the upper reaches of the Palouse River.
Clearwater River Drainage
The area along the Clearwater River was originally inhabited by vari-
ous bands of Nez Perce along the western edge of what is now Clearwater
County in central Idaho. Hunting and fishing parties traveled in and out
of the area while others would travel to prairies and meadows above the
river to gather roots and berries.
From its headwaters in the mountains of the Bitterroot Range on the
Idaho-Montana border, the Clearwater River runs west across the state to
Lewiston where it joins the Snake River. Starting at an elevation of almost
9,000 feet, the river drops to just more than 700 feet above sea level as it
drains an area of approximately 9,640 square miles. Its major tributaries
