Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. The team came together in November of 1999 to begin a discussion of the development of an assessment program for children exposed to chronic trauma. The rationale for creating a team to provide comprehensive assessment was based on the work of our project director, Dr. Jim Henry, who had worked in protective services for 17 years and continued to see the significant lack of knowledge about the effects of trauma available to foster parents. Most children who were placed had been victims of trauma and foster parents had no information or training to enable them to understand and to respond adequately to the needs of these children. A prevailing theme that emerged in our discussion was that the assessment approach needed to be based on a transdisiplinary model. Dunn describes the transdisciplinary approach as “one in which team members work together throughout assessment, diagnostic, planning, and implementation of intervention”. Rather than a multi or interdisciplinary team “pull out” approach, where the child is individually assessed by each member of the team, each discipline is trained in administration, scoring, and interpretation of the other team members assessments. At CTAC, for example, a social worker and occupational therapist administer the complete assessment battery (with exception of the physical examination and audiology testing) (See Handout 3) including the speech, language, and communication components. At the end of day, the team as a whole assembles to discuss each child. The SW and OT present summative information. The rest of the team, including the SLP, who has observed (thru a one way viewing window-hence the assessment in the round) the assessment of the child by the SW and OT, adds to the discussion with her observations that further illuminate and explain findings related to specific speech issues. The SW and OT, having gathered the feedback from the team observations, then are assigned to prepare the assessment report-in effect, representing the findings of all the team members. Team includes undergraduate and graduate level interns in each area
