On March 21st 2011, Art is Open Source held a lesson on the theme: "Cross Media design scenarios: smartphones and tablets" The workshop engaged the problems, approaches, methodologies and processes that designers can use in imagining, designing and implementing cross media design products. Some energies were used to describe really interesting scenarios that allow using cross media design to implement solutions that are useful not only for business, but also for society, the environment and the cultural ecosystem, promoting a more tolerant, multicultural, sustainable take on the world. These are the slides that have been used in the workshop, complete with a full end-to-end example of the creation of a location based application for iPhone/iPad. Social networks have jumped onto the geolocation bandwagon with location-based tweets, status updates, check-ins, mayorships, and more. This doesn’t take into account EXIF, QR codes, and advancements in HTML 5 geo implementations, which are being built into these location-based services. This is often implemented and enabled without the user even knowing it. In fact, geolocation is one of the hottest technologies being used in everything from web browsers to mobile devices. As social networks throw our location coordinates around like candy, its only natural that bad things will happen and abuse will become more popular. This presentation will cover how social networks and other websites are currently using location-based services, what they plan on doing with it, and a discussion on the current privacy and security issues. We will also discuss the latest geolocation hacking techniques and will release custom code that can abuse all of the features being discussed. Tom Eston is a Senior Security Consultant for SecureState. Tom focuses his research on the security of social media. Tom is also the founder of SocialMediaSecurity.com and co-host of the Security Justice and Social Media Security podcasts. Kevin Johnson is a security researcher with Secure Ideas. He has many years of experience performing security services for Fortune 100 companies, and leads a large number of open source security projects including BASE and SamuraiWTF. Kevin is also an instructor for SANS. Presented at Notacon 8 in Cleveland Ohio.

Location based Services have entered the mainstream. Personal Navigation Devices in cars are ubiquitous and personal navigation on the phone is already a big business. Nokia alone is going to have over a hundred million GPS enabled devices across the whole product range in the market by 2010, challenges like battery live and slow positioning technology have been solved to a satisfying extent. Now Location based services are about to get social, considered by some as the holy grail of LBS. Everyone is in the starting blocks to grab a piece of the pie, innovative start-ups, the operators with millions of customer relations and the handset manufacturers who put the ultimate gateway in our hands. And why are the big ones like Facebook missing the train so far? What is the ecosystem going to look like and how do we overcome major obstacles including privacy, signal vs. noise and user experience on the fourth screen? Felix Petersen is giving his perspective on things, both as co-founder of one of the pioneering startups in this space and as an employee of the dominating handset manufacturer aggressively pushing towards a vertically integrated end user experience.
