The 2011 Annual Conference of the Chinese American Librarians Association Midwest Chapter was held on May 21, 2011 at the Indiana University Southeast Library. The conference focused on emerging trends in libraries and included topics such as digital knowledge management, institutional repositories, e-books, information literacy education, libraries intranet redesign, and social media marketing for libraries. Students could inquire about the student travel fund by contacting the program chair. The event featured presentations, awards and free collectable prizes both in person and online.

Social environment is interactive with human’s subsistence and development. When we make an analysis of the profound changes that have happened to China’s society over the past 30 years, the “human” that lives in the society by itself serves as an important symbol that can help us to trace such a history. The study, entitled “Change of Chinese Values across Different Generations”, worked out by the HorizonKey, aims to make analyses of and comparisons between Chinese people’s values during different generations to reflect all-time changes in the Chinese society. Through our researches, it is not difficult to find that people born in the 1960s and 70s tend to share a unified value and perspective. What both the two generations care more about are devotion, loyalty and sharing with others. However, the case is different when it comes to those born in the 1980s. These less-than-30-years-old people face a diversified value system and they have no unified standard and perspective towards the same problem. For the generation in the 1990s, things are also different. As the country opens wider to the outside world, the society becomes more diversified and more tolerant. The “self-centered” value has gradually dominated the minds of this young generation. Different groups not only hold different views about which value should take a leading position, but also show differences over what influences the same value element will produce on different-generation groups. This report presented by us aims to help you more deeply understand the differences between different generations of Chinese people as well as probe into the vicissitude China’s society has experienced over the past 30 years.

The Information Technology Rural Librarian Master's Scholarship Program (ITRL) has been awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee to train sixteen paraprofessionals working in the Southern and Central Appalachian rural libraries to get their master’s degree part-time (June 2010 - August 2012) with a focus on information technology and rural librarianship via distance education. The ITRL Annual Summit 2011 is a recorded presentation of two faculty members and thirteen ITRL students regarding their experiences during their first year in the program. Academic and public librarians are increasingly recognizing the value of online tutorials as a means of providing patrons with the ability to learn information literacy concepts and explore library tools at their own pace and at the point of need. However, a static tutorial video cannot compete with the dynamic, engaging information content that patrons encounter in their everyday lives, and they often fail to produce lasting learning. Studies have shown that providing students with content that requires interaction and participation more successfully keeps their attention and ensures more permanent recall. This presentation demonstrates several steps librarians can take in creating online tutorials to make them more engaging for patrons and, in turn, more useful.
