5. Our country in some
words…
The Republic of Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe.
It is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by
Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the
east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the
southwest and Austria to the west.
The capital and largest city is Budapest.
The official language is Hungarian or also, known in Hungary as Magyar, which is part
of the Uralic family and is the most widely spoken non- Indo-European language in
Europe.

6. Budapest – one of the „youngest” capitals of Europe
– has a history of more than a thousand years.
Pest and Buda, two free royal cities and Óbuda, an agricultural town have an
uncertain history. The apparent contradiction lies in the fact that the three towns were only
united in the second half of the last century.

7. Hungary is one of the thirty most popular tourist destinations of the world, attracting 8.6 million
tourists per year.
One of the unique features of Budapest is that it is the only metropolis in the
world that is rich in thermal waters. One of the reasons why the Romans colonized the
area to the west of the river Danube and founded Aquincum, their centre here, was that they liked the
healing power of the thermal waters.

8. The country is home to:
the largest lake in Central Europe - Lake Balaton
the second largest thermal lake in the world - Lake Hévíz
the largest thermal water cave system

Peter BESENYEI
At the age of 15 years of age he flew a glider for the first time. In 1976 Peter entered
his first flying competition by piloting a glider and showed his talent, finishing in
second place. He won his first gold medal in 1982 at the Austrian National
Championships. His specialty is free-style aerobatics. He invented a number of
original snap rolls and, in 1984, the "knife-edge spin". In 1995 Peter Besenyei won 2
gold and 2 silver medals and he was named the most successful aerobatics pilot of
his time.

maneuver that became a standard in air races today.
Besenyei is sometimes referred to as the godfather of the Red Bull Air Race because of his work helping develop it. He
was asked, in 2001 by the Austrian energy-drink company Red Bull, to help develop the concept of an air race
competition. With enthusiasm he helped set up the rules and regulations and carefully selected the most daring pilots,
with skills and courage, to handle the extreme physical and mental challenges of the air race. The first race was held in
2003 in Zeltweg, Austria. After two years the competition became a worldwide organization of Red Bull Air Race World
Series.
He is currently a test pilot for the Hungarian Aviation Office and a flying instructor for aerobatic pilots on Zivko Edge

41. Museum village in Sóstó
During the competition free for all AWAC contesants
The only outdoor ethnographic museum in the region, the Sóstói
Museum Village, opened in 1979, preserves and presents the
diversified architecture and the tradition of the Northern Over-Tisza
region. It is a real spectacle!
On the area of 7.5 hectares, a village center was developed with
handicraft workshops, schools, fireman depot, bell tower, church, dry
mill, working grocery and pub. In the grocery dating from the beginning
of the century, someone is selling, in the pub drinks are being
measured, in the small handicraft workshops the shoemaker is working
and the hat maker…
Every summer the Museum Village is waiting for its guests with various
programs - concerts, folk dances, local food tasting – while the
handicraft trades and folk traditions can be also seen.
Popular are the programs, concerts and culinary demonstrations
organized at the occasion of Easter, Pentecost, Children’s Day,
Midsummer's Night, Harvest Day, Mihály’s Day.

42. Zoological Park
During the competition free for all AWAC contesants
Embraced by the Sóstó oak forest, there is the Zoological Park of
Nyíregyháza, which, with its area of almost 30 hectares, is the largest one in
the country. There is a new sensation every year.
The park, however, is not an ordinary zoo. More than 300 species of animals
from fivecontinents, nearly 3,500 animals wait for the
visitors in naturalcircumstances.
The Zoo is the most beautiful one in the country because the natural
treasures left almost untouched fit the environment.
The "most animalic„ because its inhabitants live in the similar milieu of
their natural habitat; the richest, because in the provinces here can be found
the most species (300) and most individuals (about 3500), the most
unique, since it is the only place where can be seen for
example, white tigers, macaws, adaxantelope, striped mongoose, Ko modo
monitor lizards, sharks; the most transparent, because the sights are
grouped per continent; the "newest",
because every year new sensation professionals are constantly emerging.
In May, 2010 the new facility of the park, unique in the European area, the
Green Pyramid opened its gates. The four-storey complex with
Oceanarium, Rain forest house, presents on an area of nearly four
thousand square meters the wildlife of

43. Sosto Public Beach and Spa
During the competition free for all AWAC contesants
A charming spa famous for its thermal water about 6 kilometers from
the center of Nyíregyháza. It was named after the salty lake divided
into two; it was named like that even at the end of the 18th century
on a map. In 1927 it was officially registered as a spa under the
name of Sóstófürdő. It is spreading on 46 hectares.
The lake itself is a pond filling the deepest part of the area on 9,5
hectares, with an average depth of 1,5 meters, 2,4 meters at the
deepest point. The water of the lake was thought to have a peculiar
healing nature from ages. This place was known as Igrice even in
the age of King Matthias. András Jósa said the water of the lake
heals you from rheumatic and imflammatory diseases or other
diseases. Sóstó – because of its special atmosphere, fresh forest air,
the thermal water of healing nature, the lake of silky waters luring to
swim and boat – has always been a favourite destination for
citizens, craftsmen, bohemian writers and artists.
The place has preserved much of this atmosphere, thanks to the
nice natural surroundings, the buildings of national monument and
the 50 °C thermal water, bursting out from the 800-meter-deep soil
layers of the last Hungarian sea, Pannon.
The most beautiful building you can see in Sóstógyógyfürdő are the
Water Tower as the symbol of Sóstó; the legendary Svájci Lak; athe
Bathing House, which was the first spa of the city and the Krúdy
Vigadó renovated in 2003, which was originally operating as a hotel,
now serving as a relaxation complex. Besides the buildings and
natural characteristics, there are other specialities as well in
Sóstógyógyfürdő as unique sights in Hungary.

44. Júlia Public Bath
During the competition free
for all AWAC contesants
The first stop of the bath culture of Nyíregyháza, looking
backward on rich traditions, is the Júlia Public Bath, which
attracts people to relax, recover, recreate themselves very
near the city centre.
The Bath, lying on a surface of 6500 m2 due to its location in
the city centre, it can be easily accessed by walk or by public
transport from the farther points of the city. Lovers of thermal
water, sauna, swimming, can find customized services
providing relaxation, recovering, recreation, for example 3
saunas, dry and wet steam rooms, tub bath, infrasauna,
massage, pedicure, cafeteria, swimming pool of 25 m,
thermal, outdoor pool. The Finnish sauna in the yard is
pleasantly hired by families or friend gatherings.
