[6] has been damaged by bad old repair ; lacking 2 blank leaves following "Justification du tirage" and preceeding colophon ; "Justification du tirage" has been bound in front of t.p. Copy [A] previously shelved at: 24.G.121 http://angelasancartier.net/paul-iribe Poiret commissioned Iribe to illustrate his first major dress collection in a 1908 portfolio entitled Les robes de Paul Poiret racontées par Paul Iribe. This limited edition publication (250 copies) was innovative in its use of vivid fauvist colors and the simplified lines and flattened planes of Japanese prints. To create the plates, Iribe utilized a hand-coloring process called pochoir, in which bronze or zinc stencils are used to build up layers of color gradually. This publication, and others that followed, anticipated a revival of the fashion plate in a modernist style to reflect a newer, more streamlined fashionable silhouette. http://www.archive.org/details/lesrobesdepaulpo00irib http://ia700608.us.archive.org/27/items/lesrobesdepaulpo00irib/lesrobesdepaulpo00irib.pdf http://www.antiquesandfineart.com/articles/article.cfm?request=817 In 1908, Poiret asked the illustrator Paul Iribe to assist in producing a limited edition catalogue entitled Les robes de Paul Poiret. This colorful “look book” featured Poiret’s clothing set against elaborate art-filled rooms, and single-handedly established the importance of the decorative interior as the ideal home for fashion creations. The partnership of an elongated chaise lounge with an Empire-styled gown, for example, provided clients with an appropriate context for Poiret’s couture. Models were posed before paintings, or admiring sculpture (Fig. 2), placing Poiret’s clothing in a direct relationship with art.

Bibliographie générale du costume et de la mode, 1837 http://www.foxrarebooks.com/leschoses3.html “ Considered to be one of the most important, and one of the most beautiful, fashion books of its time, this album was commissioned by the "King of Fashion", Paul Poiret, to showcase his newest styles. Georges Lepape was an assistant to Poiret and his illustrations are reproduced by Jean Saude in gold and silver highlighted pochoir.” http://www.georginakelman.com/artist_bio.php?artist=14 “ In 1910 he collaborated with Poiret to create the deluxe fashion album "Les Choses de Paul Poiret", where Lepape caused a sensation in both the fashion and artistic worlds with his use of Art Deco simplicity and geometry well before the style was established.” http://www.dhub-bcn.cat/en/dhubdoc/Les-Choses-de-Paul-Poire-vues-par-Georges-Lepape « In 1910, Georges Lepape (1887-1971) , French illustrator began working for Paul Poiret (1879-1944) , for whom he illustrated this famous publication in 1911. In fact, following the style of Robes de Paul Poiret told by Paul Iribe , in 1908, and is a clear anteceden to the luxury magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton . They did a print run of 1000 copies, 300 of them in deluxe edition. It contained 12 colour handmade stencil illustrations using templates. « http://www.antiquesandfineart.com/articles/article.cfm?request=817 Later, Poiret collaborated with artist Georges Lepape for the design of a second catalogue where again, interior and exterior settings were juxtaposed with various clothing ensembles to present Poiret’s vision for a decorative totality: fashion, interior, and decorative object. http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2007/poiret/iribe-and-lepape « Poiret, Paul Iribe, and Georges Lepape Poiret was proud of having introduced Paul Iribe to a wider audience through Les robes de Paul Poiret (1908). Distributed without charge to Poiret's elite clientele , the album, like Georges Lepape's Les choses de Paul Poiret published three years later, was exhibited at the Galerie Barbazanges, a commercial gallery on the premises of Poiret's couture house. It was Iribe who designed Poiret's rose motif, as depicted on "La Rose d'Iribe" dress and on the couturier's label. In his memoirs, however, Poiret dismisses the implication that Iribe and Lepape were anything more than interpreters of his fully formed expressions. In his description of his collaboration with the two artists, they emerge as disseminators of his designs, representing his works through their talents as illustrators—never as creators of the designs themselves. The reality, however, was probably much more complicated. The charming renderings by Iribe in Les robes de Paul Poiret and by Lepape in Les choses de Paul Poiret (and later in the Gazette du bon ton ) convey a contextual reality for Poiret's exquisite creations . Comparing extant costumes to their representation, however, reveals that accuracy was sometimes sacrificed for dramatic intention. Nevertheless, Iribe's and Lepape's subtle stylistic elisions and exaggerations imbued Poiret's fashions with a seductive beauty not conveyed by the harsher documentary evidence of photography.”
