GUEST SPEAKER FOR MONDAY
Deborah Carr is the Director of Fundraising & Communications for Parramatta
Mission, a role which she has held for two and a half years and in which she wears
‘many hats’ – as both the public relations manager, communications manager,
fundraising manager, corporate sales manager, marketing manager, government
relations manager, etc. Prior to Parramatta Mission, Deborah worked as the
Communications Manager for ParaQuad NSW (the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic
Association) – her first stint in the charity sector. Before that time, Deborah held
marketing and communications roles in the finance sector and building industry,
and ran her own small business for nine years.
Parramatta Mission has been providing services to people who are homeless,
facing crisis and living with mental illness for over 40 years. Its broader history can
be traced back to the opening of the first Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on the current head office site in 1821,
and with it - the commencement of multiple community outreach and support services.
Headquartered and with numerous services in the Parramatta CBD, the Mission’s programs are delivered
from no less than 80 sites - extending across Western Sydney, to the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains and
Liverpool.
Just some of Parramatta Mission’s 70+ programs include; Lifeline Western Sydney, Thelma Brown Cottage
domestic violence refuge, headspace Mt Druitt, Meals Plus Community Outreach, UnitingCare Mental Health,
Hope Hostel and Parrahouse Youth Refuge.
Each year Parramatta Mission provides approximately 100,000 meals to people experiencing disadvantage,

refuge from domestic violence to around 80 women and 125 accompanying children, and telephone
counselling support to 17,500 people by 110 volunteer telephone counsellors. Every day, Parramatta Mission
provides housing and support to over 300 people – families, young people, women and men – who through
no fault of their own find themselves without a home and without the help to get back on their feet.
Deborah will talk in more detail about Parramatta Mission’s services, especially the integrated structure of its
services, as well as the challenges faced by not-for-profits in terms of donor expectations and responsible
corporate governance.
DAVID’S PEARLS
Responsibility
Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.
- Colin Powell
I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every
possession, a duty.
- John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or
the wind, but you can change yourself.
- Jim Rohn
No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.

PRESIDENT’S WANT LIST
WANT No 1.
We are a vocational based service organization. Our members all have a business background and one
of the major survival technics in businesses is succession planning. If we want our business to survive we need
to know that if anything happens to me, who understands my business and can step up to the plate.
Therefore my No 1 “want” is all members put into practice what they already do in business, but this time it is
a session plan for their membership of our club. That is, who will replace me when I leave the Rotary Club of
Parramatta City. We need to have in place a club survival practice of succession membership I want every
member to identify a successor for themselves by October 2012 being our vocational month. By this date you
will advise the membership Director who your successor is.
WANT No 2.
Knowledge is a wonderful gift and my second want is I would like all members to adopt a program or project
as their Rotary knowledge base as to be able to speak on the subject when-ever called upon to do so. This
