oor County offers much
in the way of sustain-
able food to enjoy. They
grow those fabulous
cherries, both sour cher-
ries for pies (the fabled
Montmorency) as well as
sweet cherries including Bings and
Lamberts. They put these cherries
up into wines, jams, chutneys, sal-
sas and other versions too numer-
ous to list. You can even learn to
spit cherries in one of their famous
local sports, where cherry spitting
pits are carefully marked. How far
can you spit a cherry? Come see.
As you might expect, they make and
serve fantastic local ice cream. I
mean after all. This is Wisconsin.
The Dairy state? There’s more to
that than cheese. Although there
are more artisan cheese makers in
the state than any other, and you
can find stupendous cheeses to
enjoy and to take home.
The other iconic food ceremony
in Door County is what’s called
a fish boil. It’s one of those you
have to see it to believe kind of
events, where they boil up white
lake fish then add oil and set the
whole damn thing on fire. Plus the
fish is delicious. Yes, you can drink
wine or margaritas by the lake.
You can find fabulous pizzas (who
knew?) and sustainable foods in the
restaurants.

With five state
parks, eleven light-
houses and 300
miles of shoreline,
this 70-mile long
sliver of land that
juts out into Lake
Michigan combines
pristine scenery
with acclaimed
performing arts,
renowned gal-
leries and shops,
and pampering
accommodations.
Small wonder it
was named one of
the top ten vaca-
tion destinations in
North America by
Money Magazine
and that each year
more than 2 million
visitors claim this
jewel as their own.
But be sure to save
time to enjoy the
tranquility offered
by less energetic
pursuits. Stroll
along the scenic
shorelines or take a
sunset cruise along
the shore and make
lasting memories
with someone
special. Let thou-
sands of acres of
nature preserves
and parks fill you
with their peace-
ful sounds, sights
and smells as you
explore quiet paths.
