Environmental Impact of Land Filling
 Untreated solid waste will lead to the

formation of leachate which will flow into
underground water & contaminate the
surrounding area.
 The land fill site will become unfit for
plantation.
 If the solid waste is treated with effective
microbes we can prevent the above
mentioned ill effect to a large extent.

What is Solid waste ?
 The material which is discarded after use

is called as waste.such as
paper,clothes,can,food scrap etc.

What is EM?







EM is the abbreviation of ‘Effective
Microorganisms’, originated by Dr. Prof.
Teruo Higa at the Ryukyus University,
Okinawa, Japan in the early 1980s.
It is a consortium of selected microbes
like Lactic Acid bacteria, Photosynthetic
bacteria and yeast.
All these are mutually compatible with
one another and co-exist in liquid
culture below a pH of 3.5.

The microorganisms are not Genetically
engineered, exotic or imported. They are
produced in our factory in Kolkata.
 All microbes are facultative. They exhibit
both aerobic and anaerobic characteristics.
 They work in a wide range of temperatures,
salinity and pH values.
 Maple EM.1 is certified as an Organic input
by ECOCERT, France and is now being used
in over 126 Countries worldwide.

BENEFITS OF USING EM IN SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT
The benefits are:

1) Odor removal
EM effectively suppresses the harmful gases, such as ammonia
and hydrogen sulphide, which are generated during degradation
of organic matters in a solid waste. It has a very strong sterilizing
effect to suppress harmful micro-organisms that are responsible
for generating foul odor. It creates a very hygienic condition
around the garbage dumping site.

2) Decline of fly population
Because of the reduction of the harmful gases and keeping good
hygienic condition of garbage heaps, the files, which are usually
attracted by it, are automatically reduced from the dumping site.

Protection of environment and health of workers
EM is a very eco-friendly solution, therefore, the currently used
chemical solutions, which have a very hazardous side effect on
environment and on the health of dumping site workers, can
completely be eliminated.

High quality organic compost
The solid waste, after treating with EM for a rapid degradation, can
be used as a high quality compost in agro fields. It realizes the
ideal recycling system in solid waste management/agriculture.

The benefits are :

Low cost application
Because EM is self propagating, the cost of the application for the
huge garbage heaps, could be just a few hundreds rupees per day.
It is a very cost effective as compared to the various chemical
solutions.

6) Easy Maintenance
EM microbes create strong anti-oxidation effects and prevent early
corrosion of the facilities such as ageing of concrete wall and
rusting of metal parts. Thus, it greatly minimizes the need of
maintenance or parts replacement over a long period.

7) EM can be used in existing garbage heaps or any other systems
virtually as they stand. There is no need for any costly
installations or modifications.
8) EM can be applied in every case of rotten garbage including
compost pits in private homes and littered garbage on the
streets, left over food in hotels, and programs designed to clean
up the complete solid waste system.
9) EM removes bad odor from any kind of rotten garbage at a very
fast pace.

Recommendations of Supreme court of India for SWM wide gazette no-6481 dated 25th sep 2000  Waste should be stabilized before putting in landfill.  Waste should be treated by eco friendly method using Microbial Culture.  Waste should be treated by composting , anaerobic digestion so that it will not give adverse effect on human health & environment 3

Environmental Impact of Land Filling  Untreated solid waste will lead to the formation of leachate which will flow into underground water & contaminate the surrounding area.  The land fill site will become unfit for plantation.  If the solid waste is treated with effective microbes we can prevent the above mentioned ill effect to a large extent. 4

  • 9. What is Solid waste ?  The material which is discarded after use is called as waste.such as paper,clothes,can,food scrap etc. 9

  • 11. What is EM?    EM is the abbreviation of ‘Effective Microorganisms’, originated by Dr. Prof. Teruo Higa at the Ryukyus University, Okinawa, Japan in the early 1980s. It is a consortium of selected microbes like Lactic Acid bacteria, Photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. All these are mutually compatible with one another and co-exist in liquid culture below a pH of 3.5. The microorganisms are not Genetically engineered, exotic or imported. They are produced in our factory in Kolkata.  All microbes are facultative. They exhibit both aerobic and anaerobic characteristics.  They work in a wide range of temperatures, salinity and pH values.  Maple EM.1 is certified as an Organic input by ECOCERT, France and is now being used in over 126 Countries worldwide. 11 

BENEFITS OF USING EM IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT The benefits are: 1) Odor removal EM effectively suppresses the harmful gases, such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, which are generated during degradation of organic matters in a solid waste. It has a very strong sterilizing effect to suppress harmful micro-organisms that are responsible for generating foul odor. It creates a very hygienic condition around the garbage dumping site. 2) Decline of fly population Because of the reduction of the harmful gases and keeping good hygienic condition of garbage heaps, the files, which are usually attracted by it, are automatically reduced from the dumping site. 60

The benefits are: 3) Protection of environment and health of workers EM is a very eco-friendly solution, therefore, the currently used chemical solutions, which have a very hazardous side effect on environment and on the health of dumping site workers, can completely be eliminated. 4) High quality organic compost The solid waste, after treating with EM for a rapid degradation, can be used as a high quality compost in agro fields. It realizes the ideal recycling system in solid waste management/agriculture. 61
  • 62. The benefits are : 5) Low cost application Because EM is self propagating, the cost of the application for the huge garbage heaps, could be just a few hundreds rupees per day. It is a very cost effective as compared to the various chemical solutions. 6) Easy Maintenance EM microbes create strong anti-oxidation effects and prevent early corrosion of the facilities such as ageing of concrete wall and rusting of metal parts. Thus, it greatly minimizes the need of maintenance or parts replacement over a long period. 62

There is no need for any costly installations or modifications. 8) EM can be applied in every case of rotten garbage including compost pits in private homes and littered garbage on the streets, left over food in hotels, and programs designed to clean up the complete solid waste system. 9) EM removes bad odor from any kind of rotten garbage at a very fast pace. 63
