Screening results Articulation Language
Vowels: many vowels are right on target ~ however many are not with various consonant
combinations. I don’t look at it as an apraxic disability but rather as a cultural difference with
Vietnamese. Mrs. T. and I discussed the vowels in V. I feel that he needs practice with the long vowels
especially in order to get used to using them more with a variety of consonants. When practice drills
with d, k, p, m, n, Nolan could produce these with long e/o/u and some /i/. Drill might be considered.
Consonants: It appears that Nolan is leaving off most final consonants but this often varies which
makes me feel the process is emerging for him but needs assistance. Examples in single words are:
emission of final sounds in pig, ball, man, wagon, table, sun. Other articulation errors varied a great
deal from single words to phrases such as sh/s, h/k, h/l, and omission of many medial sounds. Some
words were very clear such as: bubbles, baby, mommy, big, egg, here, ball.
Nolan talks in 1, 2, 3 word phrases most of the time but longer phrases can be detected by the cadence
of his utterances although not understood by the listener. A language sample is as follows:
sheep
pig
big
3. that’s a baby
baby pig
big pig
donkey
doggie
house
no doggie out
a cat
ball
called a chick
egg
here
bubbles
sure
go
more bubbles
get more bubbles

To the SLP:
You will adore working with this family. Holly is delightful and eager to learn strategies
she can use with her young son. I would not recommend dropping the cultural Vietnamese
language (as was one professional’s recommendation). Nolan appears to understand in both
and also appears to have a normal IQ to receive both languages.
