What is a storyboard?
Think about the different parts…
Understand use of storyboards

Storyboards Create an original storyboard

Used as a way of planning what
you are going to make before
you actually have to make it.

 Storyboards can allow you to
see how a storyline will flow
 through a comic strip.

They can also let you place
 characters and dialogue in the
panels so you don’t hide any
 deatails.
                                            #storyboard #panel
                                            #comicbook

Terminology Create an original storyboard

Panel – These are the boxes that
frame the action for each scene
 in your comic book.

 Spread - Sometimes panels may
overlap or even span across two
or more pages as a spread.

 Splash – Often the opening
scene of a comic will take up a
full page or half a page as a
 splash.
                                              #storyboard #panel
                                              #comicbook

Speech Bubble – Used to show
 dialogue between characters in
 the comic strip. Different styles
used depending on the way in
 which the dialogue would be
 delivered.

 Caption – Narrative for the
 comic strip that doesn’t belong
to the dialogue but is needed to
 explain the storyline.
                                               #storyboard #panel

Terminology Create an original storyboard

Symbolia – Elements such as a
 light bulbs being used to
indicate an idea, dotted lines for
 evil looks, dust clouds hanging
behind an object, star bursts to
 indicate dizziness.

Motion Lines – Used to indicate
 something has moved. Lines can
be straight or curved and will
 indicate the direction of travel.
                                                #storyboard #panel

 Sound Effects – One of
 the most common
 standards of comic book
 design with sounds of the
 comic strip written in
 uppercase, often 3d style
 text. Sometimes they may
 be drawn with a jagged
 edge or cloud effect
 around to indicate the
 nature of the sound.
