Marking
Marks Learning Objective
1 – 3
Pass
Summary of the capabilities and limitations of a limited
range of 2D and 3D software used for digital game creation,
demonstrate limited understanding.
4 – 6
Merit
Summary of the capabilities and limitations of a range of 2D
and 3D software used for digital game creation, demonstrate
sound understanding.
7 – 9
Distinction
Summary of the capabilities and limitations of a range of 2D
and 3D software used for digital game creation, demonstrate
thorough understanding.
 There are four main methods of
creating computer games:
 Game Engine
 Game Editor
 App Development
 Software Development Kit (SDK)
 Each type of software will have
it’s own set of tools which may
be different to others.
 Some tools are common across
all types of software but some
are quite unique.

Methods
 Game engines are the things that make
any computer game possible as these
are the technology used to develop
computer games.
 The features of this type of software
allow the user to define the following:
 Functionality
 Graphics
 Gameplay
 Animation
 Sound
 Artificial Intelligence

Game Engine
 The following games were all made by the same game engine
known as the RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine):

Game Engine
 Typical game editors will
allow you to create:
 New Missions
 New Maps
 Game Content
Understand capabilities & limits
Know key software features
Game Editor
 A game or level editor are used to make maps for a specific game
made in a particular game engine.
 When using an editor you don’t need to change the code in the
game engine, you simply design the content of the map.
#capabilities
#limitations
 This is generally known as the SDK or devkit and is basically all
of tools needed to use your game engine bundled together.
 The SDK would typically include:
 Game Engine
 Game/Level Editor
 Export Tools
 Import Tools
 Model Viewers
 Example Files
 Tutorials

Software Development Kit
 This is a relatively new area of the
game development market but one
that is growing rapidly.
 Applications are designed for one
particular operating system and
may make use of touchscreens and
motion sensors.
 Mobile apps can be released in:
 iPhone App Store
 Android Market
 Google Marketplace

App Development
 Use the Mission Maker game engine to create a single level
spending some time investigating the different options available.

Your Task
 When using Mission Maker
make sure you investigate
the following features:
 Locations
 Props
 Characters
 Doors
 Triggers

Mission Maker
* Place props around the level
* Put pickups inside of props
* Make enemies in the game
* Add weapons and ammo
* Include doors that open differently
* Make traps for players to go into
* Create a map for a level
* Move around a map freely
* Place pickups that add/take away health
* Locations (Sci-fi, desert, western)
* Characters (Alien, simian, girl, hero)
* Pickups (Gold bars, pizza, burgers, apple)
* Can't join other peoples games
* Limited number of characters
* Small map sizes
* Limited weapon choice
* Limited location choice
* Props look dated
* Map may not be well composed
* Graphics/textures aren't great
* Navigation isn't easy
* Placing props can be difficult
 Review the key features of
Mission Maker discussing:
 Capabilities
 Limitations
 List some of the main tools
available in the software and
describe what they let you
create within the game.
 Review the ease of use of the
software and draw some
conclusions.
