Transitions An effective change in leadership from one year to another is vital to an organization’s survival A transition tests an organization's ability to renew itself, so that it can continue to fulfill its mission in a changing environment A successful change in leadership: preserves the organization and the trust of its members allows it to grow and adapt to meet new challenges with imagination and enthusiasm

Ineffective Transitioning Failure to understand your responsibilities within your organization or to your organization’s transition You run the risk of losing momentum, then morale, and ultimately members Years of hard work and key relationships may be lost if you fail to understand the importance of a complete transition

8. The Process When? Early: As soon as you take office, take stock of the transition preceding you (know the path before you) Learn from your organization’s past transitioning to improve yours Effective transitioning cannot take place the night before!
9. The Process Who? Starts with you! Facilitation falls to you. You have to assume responsibility for each of the following: Your Executive Officers Your General Council Officers Your Advisors Your Administration Expectation: All will participate in the process as part of position responsibilities

Resources Required A complete record of the organization's structure, goals and accomplishments (organized files): Constitution and By-laws Organizational goals and objectives for previous year(s) Job descriptions/role clarification's Status reports on ongoing projects Evaluations of previous projects and programs Previous minutes and reports Resources/contact lists with addresses and phone numbers Financial books and Institutional documents/policies Mailing lists
