2. A MESSAGE FROM ATTIVIO’S CEO
I spent the first ten years of my career hoping that business intelligence,
client relationship management and enterprise resource planning
applications would help my colleagues and I run our businesses with
precisely tailored and timely decisions. In reality, though, all we really got
were graphs and tables, so we still had to call around just as in the old
days in order to fully understand the causes driving variations — whether
for the good or bad. This is because structured data can only tell you
WHAT is happening in your organization, but not WHY.
I spent the next ten years in the world of unstructured content and data,
analyzing the information in content management systems, support logs,
document management systems, emails, documents and the Web.
While this was a great step forward, we still could not figure out what
a 10% growth in support calls or more recently what a 15% decline in
positive comments in social media and other such findings actually meant
in terms of transactional value, because unstructured content on its own,
represents just one more piece of the overall picture. In the quest to make
the best possible decisions, analyzing structured data and unstructured
content independently just results in more questions and more work.

Support analysts at a leading
enterprise deal with thousands of IT
incidents, many of which are critical
and time-sensitive. Before deploying
AIE, the analysts had to manually sift
through individual silos of information,
including service databases, vendor
documentation, wikis, emails, SharePoint
and more, causing unacceptably high
resolution rates.
Attivio worked alongside the company to
seize the opportunity – deploying AIE to
give the support team a single unified view
into every relevant information source. The
cost-per-ticket decreased dramatically and
mean-time-to-resolution was reduced by
more than 40%.
SOLVE CHALLENGES
A major bank was required to reserve
more than $1 billion in cash to guard
against fines that could result if it was
found to be in violation of the ever-
changing landscape of regulations
governed by more than 200 agencies
worldwide. Different parts of the bank
concentrated on local, national, and
global regulators, all disparate and in
constant motion.
Attivio worked with the bank to solve
their challenge – creating an automated
system to identify changes on
regulatory sites and in the news; alert
the appropriate personnel to implement
policy changes, via role-specific
dashboards; and provide an audit trail
of updates. The money in reserves
reduced by half.

content to be defined in advance. AIE ingests structured data on a table-

10. REAL-TIME UPDATES
AIE is designed for real-time operation. New documents can be added
and made available for search in batches of 100 or 1,000 in less than two
seconds. Important individual fields can be updated nearly instantly, even
under heavy query load, with no need to re-index the document.
REAL-TIME ACTIONS
Any query AIE can execute can be saved as an alert to be run on a
scheduled or continuous basis to execute a simple action, like notifying a
user via email, or more sophisticated tasks, such as updating a database
or triggering a CRM application.
WORKFLOWS
Customizable workflows integrate processing, querying and actions.
Workflows can include linear processes, conditional logic (branching),
