‐ To improve the students’ understanding and knowledge of
the United Kingdom.
OBJECTIVES
‐ Using the current topics that each of the classes are
learning, extend this knowledge more specifically to the
United Kingdom.
‐ Make it fun for the children to learn about the United
Kingdom.
‐ Firstly, with each class I established three points, What do you
How it was know? What do you want to know? then, after we have completed
thought? the project What have you learnt?
(step by step) ‐ In the first point, we get to know their previous knowledge, with
each class; we create a basic PowerPoint shown on the projector
screen, so that they could see what they had already said.
‐ I created activities and lessons based on the current units that
they were learning; e.g. animals and food, so I linked these units in
with the project of the United Kingdom; animals in the UK and
food in the UK.
‐ After we completed these activities; which consisted of
PowerPoint presentations to begin their understanding of these
topics, we moved on to the topics about the United Kingdom that I
decided would be appropriate:
METHODOLOGY
• 1st Level ‐ Flags of the United Kingdom, England, Scotland,
Northern Ireland & Wales.
‐ Iconic British objects or buildings.
The activities that this included was; teaching the children where
the United Kingdom is in the world, firstly Europe, then the United
Kingdom, then each of the individual countries in the United
Kingdom. After being satisfied that the children could name the
countries; I taught them the flags of the countries. When this was
done, worksheets were given to the children with blank pictures of
the flags, and a blank picture of the United Kingdom; they had to
colour in the flags in the correct colours and match these flags
with the appropriate part of the United Kingdom.
• 2nd Level ‐ Flags of the United Kingdom, and the where the
United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland &
Wales are in the world and Europe.
The activities for second level were the same as the activities for
first level, but with more grown up vocabulary, and a different
worksheet.
2. • 3rd Level ‐ British sports; cricket, football & rugby.
‐ British songs, which ends in learning a song; “Take That –
Shine”
The activities for third level included introductions to the United
Kingdom, with verbal activities; asking questions after each slide to
see if the children understand. This was then followed up by
worksheets that tested the students on their understanding, with
word searches, crosswords and word scrambles.
The next activity was to teach the children the song that I had
decided on; we began by watching & listening to the music video a
couple of times, then we listened to the song with the lyrics on a
Power Point presentation, so that the children could follow along
with the words, then we worked through, each paragraph at a
time singing with the students.
• 4th Level ‐ British weather; weather reports.
‐ British songs, the same as third level.
Fourth level’s activities began with establishing what the children
thought the weather was like in the United Kingdom, using the
vocabulary that they had learnt in the unit of “weather”. We
followed this up with current weather reports from the United
Kingdom, and the students had to place weather symbols in the
correct places on the map, like a weather report on the television.
The following activity was the same as third level.
• 5th Level ‐ All about the United Kingdom; the countries, the
people, the food, London, the royal family & famous
landmarks.
Fifth level’s activities were mainly learning about the United
Kingdom, with verbal questions throughout the lessons to make
sure that the children understood. At the end of these lessons, the
children gathered into groups of three/four to compete in a quiz in
a co‐operative way. The quiz was made up of questions, a word
search, a crossword, a word scramble and other types of
questions.
• 6th Level ‐ All about the United Kingdom; the countries, the
people, the food, London, the royal family & famous
landmarks.
Fifth level’s activities were mainly learning about the United
Kingdom, with verbal questions throughout the lessons to make
sure that the children understood. At the end of these lessons, the
children gathered into groups of three/four to compete in a quiz.
The quiz was made up of questions, a word search, a crossword, a
word scramble and a other types of questions.
After we completed the quiz with fifth and sixth levels, I created a
board game about the United Kingdom that fifth and sixth level
completed.
3. • The children were very enthusiastic to learn about the
United Kingdom. The older students already had a good
basic knowledge of the United Kingdom, but were keen to
improve upon this, and then to show how much they had
learnt by achieving very good scores in the quiz at the end
Observations
of the project.
• The younger students appeared to love applying their
knowledge to art work, by colouring the flags in the way
that they had remembered them.
• The middle cycle loved listening and learning a British
song, especially as it was a group that they had not heard
of before.
