6. "Graffiti writing breaks the hegemonic
hold of corporate/governmental style
over the urban environment and the
situations of daily life. As a form of
aesthetic sabotage, it interrupts the
pleasant, efficient uniformity of "planned"
urban space and predictable urban living.
For the writers, graffiti disrupts the lived
experience of mass culture, the passivity
of mediated consumption." - Jeff Ferrell,
Crimes of Style
Is it art or just a crime? Beyond vandalism and defacing, graffiti has evolved into a new form of communication. As Street Art, graffiti has grown from street tags and murals to social commentary in public space as well as the use of wheat pasting, stencils, sticker art and art interventions.

Keith Harring and Basquiat originated on the streets. Artists like Shepard Faire and Banksy. They are represented in galleries, retail, cosmetics, fashion and literature. This cross over to the secular world has been a huge success for one of the most followed artists is Fafi. Fafi, like many other graffiti artists, remains anonymous. Graffiti is still a crime.
Her work doesn’t seem to comment on culture but create one, attractive and “cute” but still bold and available. The qualities of her work lead to questions about gender roles and attraction. It also completes an aesthetic, design and style that young Fafinettes connect to and want to be like. There have always been female graffiti artists but few have gained such a following. The world of Fafi has become a culture of its own.
