• The City of London, is the capital of
United Kingdom and is the largest city in
both the United Kingdom and Europe.
• London is made up of two ancient cities,
the City of London and the City of
Westminster.
• The City of London is the business and
financial center of the United Kingdom.
• The City of Westminster in London is
where Parliament and most of the
government offices are located.
• Buckingham Palace, the official London
residence of the Queen, is located in the
City of Westminster.
3. Big Ben
• Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of
Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower.
• Big Ben is the name of then 13-ton bell inside the clock.
• The tower is known as St Stephens Tower but most people refer to it as Big Ben.
• Big Ben has a height of 96 meters and was first opened in 1859, which means 157 years ago.
4. London Eye
• The London Eye was built in 1998 and was
opened March 9th, 2000.
• The huge was wheel designed to
celebrate the Millennium year 2000.
• It is 135 meters tall, and it has a diameter
of 120 meters.
• It is the fourth highest building in London.
• The architecture firm of the London Eye is
Marks Barfield.
• The wheel takes about 30 minutes to
rotate.
5. Tower Bridge
• Tower Bridge was built between 1886
and 1894.
• Tower Bridge is 244 meters long and each
tower is 65 meters high.
• Tower Bridge was designed by Sir Horace
Jones, the City Architect.
• The bridge opens at least once a day to
allow ships to cross.
6. Hyde Park
• In 1730, Queen Caroline had an artificial lake,
constructed. It curves diagonally through Hyde Park;
in Kensington Gardens the lake is called the Long
Water
• Winter Wonderland opens yearly, from November
to January, Hyde Park also offers ice skating, a circus,
Ferris wheel, and an ice palace.
7. Harrods
• The Harrods building was built between 1901 and 1905 and was commissioned
by the owner, Richard Burbridge.
• The Harrods department store takes up 5 acres of ground and has seven floors
comprising 1,000,000 ft2.
• The light bulbs that light up Harrods in the dark; are more than 12,000 light bulbs.
8. Madame Tussauds
• Madame Tussauds is a wax museum
in London.
• It was founded by wax sculptor
German wax modeler, Marie
Tussaud.
• Marie Tussaud founded the famous
London museum that holds her
name early in the 1830s.
