Math & Science
By: Taylor Bruer, Chelsea Miller, and Ashley Williams
Definitions
• MATH- (math·e·mat·ics) (mth-mtks)n. (used with a sing.
verb)The study of the measurement, properties, and
relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and
symbols.
• Science-A)Methodological activity, discipline, or study: I've got
packing a suitcase down to a science. B) An activity that
appears to require study and method: the science of
purchasing. C) Knowledge, especially that gained through
experience D) The
observation, identification, description, experimental
investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.
Importance
• Math and Science are
important because we are
surrounded by aspects of life
that are directly and
indirectly a product of a
form of math and/or
science.
How does it apply?
• Because we are required to take
math and science classes in public
education.
• Our world is changing and
technology is becoming more used in
schools and building computer
programs requires a certain level of
knowledge in math and science.
• Even if students aren’t in a
“math/science” class math and
science are woven into other
subjects as well.
• We use it in everyday tasks
throughout life.
• As 21st Century learners we have
grown up with technology and there
are more effective ways of teaching
because of the impact math/science
have had on our teaching/learning
methods.
Examples
• Whithout 21st Century Education
being applied to math and
science, we would not be able to
construct the items listed below:
• Technology
• Building everyday materials
(buildings, chairs, houses, ect.)
• Modern Medicine
• Food (Chemistry)
• Fashion (measuring)
• Machines (Cars, heavy equipment)
• Communication
(computers, computer
programs, phones, educational
videos, ect.)
• Environment (Going Green)
• Advertising
• Economy (budgets, news, ect.)
• Roadway system (bridges/tunnels)
Role of Technology
MATH
• Teacher plays a video/Podcast on lesson instead of old fashion
teaching.
• TED
• Instead of in class worksheet students can text or email answers to
teacher.
• Technology makes it easier for teachers to apply lessons to real-life
situations.
SCIENCE
• Instead of a lab report, students can make a video of themselves
preforming the experiment and the teacher can simply watch the
video.
• Hands on activities.
• Students are able to do more projects instead of just taking tests
• Students are able to watch videos of experiments that are
impossible to do in a school setting.
How to use technology?
• For the first pillar, which is science, you could the second life
person to go into a cell. When they’re in the cell that would
have to point out the cell
membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm, and nucleus. They
would have to do this for the plant and animal cell.
• For the second pillar, which is math, they would be given a
certain WebQuest that they would have to complete. This
would be in place of an exam. There will also be a song given
from youtube about the multiplying, which could be used for
younger kids.
Well Though Out Example:
Science&Math
• Students are going to be ask to learn the difference between a
solid, liquid and a gas. They will be introduced to the
assignment by completing a WebQuest. If they are having
problems with the WebQuest, or questions about the
assignment, there will be a Facebook discussion for both
parents and students to ask questions to each other and the
teacher. Next, they will create a YouTube video of themselves
performing an experiment where they turn water from ice, to
water, and then to a gas by heating it up and making steam.
After posting the video, they will go to a blog page and discuss
what they learned about the assignment, what they thought
was fun, ect. To include math in the same assignment…
Science & Math Cont.
• We would ask kids to change the temperature
from Fahrenheit to Celsius using the correct
equations for the melting and freezing point.
• Students will need to find out how to measure
water when it is a solid, liquid, and a gas. They
will also state when it is heaviest, in pounds and
kilograms. Meaning they will have to convert
pounds to kilograms.
• They will need to know the time difference in
how fast it takes water to freeze and boil from
one cup to two cups.
Well Thought Out Example:
Math
• Students will be asked to go to a specific WebQuest where
they will learn the basics of multiplication, so they will
eventually be able to do long multiplication. There will be
different games they will get to play that will involve long
multiplication. There will also be a Facebook page for the class
to ask questions and tell what they most enjoyed about the
WebQuest.
How Can You Benefit?
• Learning Math and Science in throughout school benefits us
more than we think it does. Yeah, you might not be directly
using Algebra and Chemistry in you everyday career, but you
do use the problem solving methods it indirectly teaches you.
Also, some things you learn in upper level math and science
courses take a long time to complete and involve steps, we
know from personal experience, this teaches students
patience and how to complete one thing before moving on to
the next. We use simple math in our everyday lives doing
things like, balancing a checkbook or cooking.
• Math and Science surround us, we wouldn’t have a lot of the
things we rely on without math and science. Even if you do
not use it every single day, it is important to know because
you never know when you are going to need to know the
things you learn whether they effect you or other people.
