Thank Jenny â review agenda if she hasnâtI am here to set the context for the case study we will be hearing a bit later.Want to set a framework for the relevance to all of us of leadership skills development and the added urgency of enhancing skills across the sector in a digital age.
Some of us may think I am an individual arts practitioner, or I run a one person organization, or I am a sole practioner consultant â I donât actually âleadâ anyoneBut we are talking today bout personal leadership skills that are relevant to everyone, at every stage of their careers and that apply internally and externally. Stengthening your leaderships skills will help your personal career development and, if you are running a consulting practice or an arts organization, will help your organization manage in a rapidly changing environment.
That said, we often have a stereotypical idea of what leaders look like. Traditional view. Give Humber student example (suits)
Arts and culture sector leaders may look more like this. And leadership skills bridge generations. Even if you are at an emerging level, your career will benefit if you can gain a better understanding of your own leadership strengths and challenges and find ways of growing your skills throughout your career.
One definition: Leadership is influencing people by providing purpose, direction and motivation while operating to accomplish your mission and improve your organization or your career. Good leadership skills can be defined as those actions and behaviours that support your leadership â i.e. your ability to influence, motivate and direct.Adapted from www.what-are-good-leadership-skills.com
So whether you are a consultant working with a client or the ED of an arts service organization working with a Board or an individual artist who wants to sell their works, regardless of the stage in your career, these are useful skills.Particularly liked the inclusion of integrity which I like to think is a hallmark of our sector â it is certainly important in building lasting consultant/client relationshipsThese are phrased in terms of your âinner leaderâ but easily translate to the more âbusinessâ oriented terms. For example âpersuasionâ is marketing and sales.
So we have talked about what we mean by leadership in the context of today now letâs move on to the âdigital ageâ part.We all know that we are being impacted wherever we turn by technological innovation â but we may not really reflect on how much that change means to our sector and our need for enhanced leadership.
Common theme of all the research is this (from Culture 3.0). Stratford Report: Canadians highest Internet users per capita â also use YouTube and Wikipedia more than any other country.Impacts all aspects of the sector from individual creators to arts service organizations. Some examples from the sector: Ones we all see â ebooks, music, NetflixâŠLive performances (Broadway theatre or the best of British theatre) are now being screened at local cinemas. Our own Stratford has experimented. So now can see productions ability of creators and orgs to reach audience directly (online & using social media like facebook, twitter, etc.); changes to systems/processes (e.g. ticket sales) ADD MORE here. Talking to Emma Quin of the OCC â admired her ring. We might think crafts are the most immune to major impact from digital but think again. Jewelry that is now created using digital software. Even manufactured digitally (plastic ring). The potential of digital distribution of creative content is upsetting and disrupting the traditional creative and economic relationships between all creative content producers and their ultimate consumers.Creates challenges but also huge opportunity. Does mean we need to have the skills sets to recognize and take advantage of the opportunities. As arts leaders we need to be adept at change management, risk management, adapt and drive new business models, innovation
The winning combo: The ability to harness our already strong creative skills with strong traditional + digital business skillsSo yes we need the hands-on how to use the technolgoy skills but more importantly we need the Business skills i.e. marketing (social media), finance, strategic planning, business affairs, project management, intellectual property and IP rights management, HR management â how to attract and retain those clever young digital natives; project mangement; change and risk management. That perennial favourite revenue generation â whether it is writing grants applications, driving ticket sale or pitching to potential sponsorsNew ways: e.g. Kickstarter (micro financing for creative projects)Whether for-proft or not for profit now thinking as entrepreneurs âartist/entrepreneur; entrepreneurial not-for-profits.
No one size fits all. Lifelong learning. Mentoring, Peer to peer mentoring. Online. Participating (Facebook, linkedin, twitter)Plug for WorkInCulture.
Arts and culture = creativity = innovation = potential for the sector itself to be a leader
