Design Fundamentals ,[object Object],[object Object],In a stunning reversal of the way most university courses are taught, students in the McMaster multimedia design program actually designed their own learning. Students in the Design Fundamentals course first created their own design studio, the Artists new media League (AnmL) and then worked in talent pools to create a multi-faceted networked art project. Along the way students set personal learning goals and even their own grading standards. Professor David Harris Smith and TA Meaghan Niewland commented that they had never seen anything like it before. “I’m totally blown away,” said Professor Smith.  “Me too,” said TA Meaghan Niewland.

They may be translated to any sensory system/medium. But.... Design is also about inspiration, creativity, planning So.... THIS IS A COURSE ABOUT DESIGNING AND WE ARE FOLDING THE DESIGN PROCESS INTO EVERYTHING - NOT JUST THE ASSIGNMENTS BUT INTO EVERYTHING WE DO TOGETHER> You have other multimedia courses this year - what are they? What do you expect to learn there?
  3. When users are immersed in the totally mediated conditions of avatar virtual worlds self-reflective redesigning of self, world, and actions. Media interaction allows us to consciously and externally re-enact processes of design that are beyond our ability to control in our own neurobiology. When concepts are pried loose from the grip of actuality, when we impose them onto matter, whether it is mammoth tusk ivory, or 3D graphics, we enter into a realm of re-cognition that calls forth reflection and enables us to revise and re-select our own bounded knowledges. Like all new media, it will promote new thinking and new behavior. It will certainly introduce new social-cultural strategies, especially in the hands of multimedia artists and innovators.
  4. LEARNING, DESIGN, AND SELF-CONTROL are about CREATIVITY - bringing about or bringing into being a state of things that did not previously exist. Psychologists have found THREE MAIN INGREDIENTS to self-control. Think of self-control as bringing about a change in things - bringing forth the NEW - about authoring, creating. THREE THINGS: Standards - declaring a goal - and that includes an ideal goal with rules, intentions, guidelines - anything that makes the goal what it is - that makes this new state of things stand out from the ordinary state of things. Critical question: What detailed information do we need to define this goal and to explain it to others? Monitoring - watching yourself, practicing declared self-awareness - recording or keeping track of your actions, comparing what you are doing with the goal you have declared for yourself. A feedback loop of TEST (SELF-CHECK), OPERATE (CHANGE IN THE COURSE OF ACTION), RE-TEST, EXIT. “Monitoring yourself is often the single best way to improve self-control. If you want to develop a program of regular exercise, mark your calendar or diary each day as to whether you exercised, so that by the end of the month you have a clear record of how often you worked out. If managing money is your problem, keep a written record of all your expenses. Self-control fails when monitoring breaks down. One of the main effects of drinking alcohol is that it reduces self-awareness. As a result, nearly every form of self-regulation is impaired by alcohol intoxication (STUDY OF ALCOHOL WORDS AND ATTRACTIVENESS). People who have had alcohol drink more, eat more, spend money more recklessly, engage in violent behavior, and so forth. In the same way, any other processes that reduce self-awareness or prevent people from monitoring their behavior will contribute to failures at self-control.” Willpower - the ‘muscle’ or ability to do the actions that bring about the change. You can declare your goal, you can monitor your self. Research has shown that willpower is like a muscle - it can be built up by repeated small little acts of willpower, like having good posture, flossing, being polite - these small things don’t appear to bring any immediate benefit, often having nothing to do with your big goals, but research shows that these little things make a big difference. Strength of will is also like a muscle because it works better when you have had enough rest, sleep, relaxation and recreation. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR SOCIAL AND MATERIAL TEAM-MATES - BUILD YOUR GOALS, MONITORING SYSTEMS, AND WILLPOWER INTO YOUR WORLD.
