FORENSIC
SCIENTIST
• Forensic Science-application of a
broad spectrum
of sciences and technologies to
investigate situations after the
fact, and to establish what
occurred based on collected
evidence
• Forensic Scientists are experts
who analyze every piece of
evidence following an
investigation.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
• Entry-level forensic scientists
normally have a bachelor's degree
in forensic science or a related
field, such as biology, chemistry or
physics.
• English classes are recommended
because forensic scientists need
strong written and oral
communication skills to write
reports and testify in court.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The best colleges in the US to study
forensic science are
• Boston University
• Penn State University
• Virginia Commonwealth
University
• UC Davis
• Ohio University
BEST FORENSIC COLLEGES
• Consider doing a low or non-paid
internship in a crime laboratory to
gain experience in the forensic
application of science.
• In order for you to get that
experience you will need to make
phone calls to labs in which you
are interested because they will not
be listed in the public
EXPERIENCE NEEDED
• The United States Department of
Labor expects a job growth in the
area of forensic science, at least
through 2018 and about 20% of
those jobs will be provided by the
federal government
• Even though the job rate will go
up, it doesn’t change the level of
competition for these jobs, which
is very hard
JOB OPPORTUNITY
• If you have a bachelor's degree
while working for the government
the expected pay is $95,240 yearly
• If you work in a local government
your expected pay is around
$54,990 yearly
• In California a forensic scientist is
expected to make around $68,880
a year or $33.12 per hour
SALARY
• They can help to determine if a
crime has been committed how
and when a crime was committed
• They use that information to
identify if a suspect was really
involved in a crime scene
• They can also identify disease
outbreaks and other causes of
sudden increases in death in any
population
IMPACT
• In order to solve the cases, they use any source of DNA that is
left at the crime scene
• The Sanger Method is a process established by Fred Sanger in
1975; they add four dideoxy nucleotides in order to convert the
evidence to a DNA sequence.
HEALTH RELATION
• On a daily basis they will examine
items of evidence submitted to the
laboratory, such as blood, semen,
saliva, urine, ect.
• They perform chemical extraction
processes to remove the DNA
from the stain
• Reports are written following all
testing performed, in preparation
that any one of the cases worked
on may end up going to trial
DAILY ROUTINE
• Different job titles: Medical
Examiner, Crime Science
Examiner, Forensic Engineer,
Crime Laboratory Analyst
• The highest paying of the four is
Medical Examiner; it requires an
average of more than seven years
of school
SUBHEADING
• The “CSI Effect”- is any of
several ways in which the
exaggerated portrayal of forensic
science on crime television shows
• Also some new programs in
colleges have been criticized for
ineffectively preparing their
students for real forensic work due
to there lack of ties to what
forensics really is
