MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT RESEARCH Arfa Shah Candidate number: 4739
QUESTIONS ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
1. The band do not feature on the advertisement because it is a magazine advertising the album therefore the album cover is featured, not the band. 2. There is no mise-en-scene created on the album cover because the band are not featured in it. It is just the album cover that states that the band’s album is out now. The fact that the band are not featured implies that the band’s name is well known therefore an actual image of the band is not needed for their audience to recognise their music, the name says it all. This meets the needs of their target audience because it shows that they have confidence in their audience’s ability to understand their music. 3. The font used on the band’s name is bold and very big which implies that they are popular. Also, the font used is the same as the one used on their album cover which establishes them as a consistent band. 4. There is a strong link between the album cover and the music video’s of the band, this connection is established through the use of colours. For example in the music video of “Take Me Out”, the main colour theme of the music video is yellow, cream, orange and black. Similarly, in the “Dark of the Matinee” music video, the colours cream, orange and white are used during their performance element however when they are not performing the screen is coloured in black and white. 5. There is a strong connection between the advert and the album cover because the whole advert is the album cover with the inclusion of it’s release, record label and who the rights belong to.
1. The band do not feature on the advertisement because it is a magazine advertising the album therefore the album cover is featured, not the band. This is Snow Patrol’s first album under a major record label. They’ve released 2 albums before with a minor record label which explains why they are not featured on the cover, they are already well known amongst their fan base. 2. The colours used on the advertisement are similar to the ones used on the actual album cover. The colours create a warm, content atmosphere which meets the needs of their target audience because it oozes familiarity and calmness. The advertisement doesn’t try to create something new, it reinforces the band’s ability to deliver to its target audience. 3. The font used on the advertisement is similar to the band’s album cover. It’s quite bold and looks likes individual lines have been stacked up against each other to create “Snow Patrol” and “Final Straw”. The font helps to establish the band’s identity as it makes a direct link to their album which is their identity. 4. There is a subtle link between the album covers and the music videos of the band. The music video for “Run” is set in a woodland area along with fireworks in the background that are a mix of red and orange. The music video is similar to the advert and album cover in terms of colour and setting. 5. There is a strong connection between the advertisement and album cover because the same colours, font and setting is used.
2. The mise-en-scene of the advert is very bare and minimalistic which suggests that the band want the entire focus to be on them and not of their surroundings. The atmosphere also has an air of confidence about it which indicates that the band are confident with their music and fan base, 3. The font used to advertise Razorlight is bold and black against the white background which makes it stand out more. This helps to establish their identity as a band as it suggests that Razorlight are well known amongst the music industry for being so bold with how they sell their album. 5. The advert is very similar to the actual album cover. The connection is established through using the same setting, font and picture of the band with the exception of the album’s release date. 4. There is a very subtle relationship between the album covers and music videos in terms of the colour of black. In all the music videos from the “Razorlight” album, some sort of black is used whether it be clothing or the setting. For example in the music video for “I Can’t Stop This Feeling I’ve Got”, the whole video is in black and white. 1. The band do feature on the advertisement. This may be because they want to make it clear to their target audience that they are taking an active interest in their album and the needs of the target audience. Also, being featured on the advert means that they have established themselves within the music industry.
1. The band do not feature on the cover of the advertisement, it features a penguin surrounded by a pink aura. The penguin may have been used as an extension of their own name as penguins do live in the “Arctic” and best represents their name. 2. The mise-en-scene of the advertisement can be analysed by looking at the colours. The colours used on the advertisement are very cool, calm and visually appealing which suggests that the band themselves are cool and appeal to their target audience. 3. The bold font used to advertise the band’s album is similar to the one used on the cover of their album “Favourite Worst Nightmare”. The fact that the same font is used on the advertisement helps establish the Arctic Monkeys as being a consistent band who want to maintain a consistent band image in order to prevent alienating their target audience. 4. There is a subtle relationship between the album covers and the music videos of the band. The album cover of “Favourite Worst Nightmare” is cartoon-like and suggests that the band just want to have fun and this is clear in their music video for “Brianstorm” and “Fluorescent Adolescent” where there is high energy dancing and clowns which suggests humour and a care free attitude. 5. There is a strong connection between the advertisement and album covers. For example the same font is used and the advertisement continues on with the cool and cartoon-like theme which is also featured on the actual album cover.
