diastolic hypertension 40 percent lower

I used to be skeptical about these stories
and testimonies of healing by prayer — even after I
became a Christian. Some of these stories were just

―from The Mind of Healing to the Heart of
Healing‖

As I gathered my Interns for their weekly
teaching rounds, I hesitated for a moment as
to what to teach them that afternoon. For
earlier I had a sad encounter with a Resident
who commented on one of my patients with
Leukemia. I asked him how the patient was
and he flatly answered, "nothing we can
do, SHE WILL DIE SOON".

Although I felt sad for the patient, I felt
sadder for the Resident Physician.

I wondered ... how could someone just lose
hope for a patient?

Facing my interns, I told them about this
incident. I began to tell them that although
doctors think they can do it all, they really
can't. I told them that not all healing is in the
textbooks.


The diagnosis and the treatment--these may
be very important to patient care but the
greatest part of healing I believe, is the
patient having the hope to live, the hope for
healing… Like when:

-The patient is encouraged to move on
despite the odds.
- Encouraged to eat even when it is difficult
to do so. - The patient being loved during the
ordeal and even when everything is going
really bad, that there are people praying for
them to get through that ordeal.

That afternoon, we did not study
anything about the presentation of
diseases, the diagnosis of diseases nor
the management of diseases.
We studied how to HELP our patients.
We thought of ways to give Hope, to
Encourage, to Love and to Pray.
As an ending exercise, I asked them to
draw (using crayons and a bond paper)
something they think would encourage
our patient (Her name is Lala),
something that would give her hope.
They did!

The next day, I eagerly gave their
drawings to Lala. She had this wide
smile when she received it. Still in pain
because of her Leukemia, she still
managed to say a soft "Thank you".
The following day, when I made my
rounds, the pictures were on the wall
and she was seated when she greeted
me. She was discharged 2 days later,
(NOTE: SHE DIDN'T PASS ON!)


2 weeks later, she sent me a card for
that gesture of hope. Her fight against
her cancer is still not over but with her
renewed hope and strength, and with
God's favor, I know she will be alright.

From that time, every group of interns
that rotated under me, I lectured on The
Heart of Healing hoping to inspire them
to continue giving HELP to patients
under their care.
