2. About URL
Think of the World Wide Web as a vast collection of
electronic files stored on millions of computers all
around the world.
Hypertext links these files together.
The addresses used to locate these files are called
Web Addresses or Uniform Resource Locators
(URLs) .
3. Uses of URL
The information contained in a URL gives you the
ability to hop from one web page to another with just
a click.
When you type a URL into your browser or click a
hypertext link, your browser sends a request to a
remote computer, called a web server, to download
one or more files.
Every URL is unique, identifying one specific file
4. Working of the URL
Request
Returns a
page
Client Server
Client clicks on a URL / Hyperlink
and sends it as a request to the server
In return the server sends a page or
a file ( as requested by the client )
5. Structure Of URL
http://www.domainname.com/folder-name/web-page-file-
name.htm
The above URL is broken down into the following parts:
1. “http://”.The first part of the URL indicates the protocol of
the URL. There are different types of protocols but we will
keep things simple and refer to the Hyper Text Transfer
Protocol (http).
2. “www.domainname.com” .This
portion is your domain name. It is
also referred to as the host or server
id.
6. 3. “/folder-name/”.As the name used implies, this
shows that the web page referenced in “filed” in a
folder on the web server.
4. “web-page-file-name.htm” .This portion of the URL
is actual web page file name.
5. The “.htm” at the end indicates it is a static web
page. File names can have different extensions
(the “.htm” part) or depending on how the web
server is set up, it could end with a “ / ”or nothing
at all.
7. Services For URL
There are many websites in which if you paste the
link you want to make shorter and click shorten
and they give you the shorted link. Bitly.com is one
such website .
URL.ie
Again, very simple interface; fill in one blank with
your URL and receive a three-character, truncated
version. There’s not really much else that URL.ie
does, but they do offer a bookmark let for you to
drag onto your Firefox bar.
