As depicted here, Pliszka and colleagues suggest a model relating norepinephrine to ADHD presentation. 1 According to this model, the interaction of norepinephrine and dopamine are critical in modulating how the brain processes and reacts to external stimuli. The model suggests that norepinephrine is involved in receiving and processing new stimuli by suppressing the spontaneous activity of the prefrontal cortex neurons, thus enhancing their response to new stimuli. Dopamine also suppresses spontaneous activity of prefrontal cortex neurons, but unlike epinephrine, it suppresses rather than enhances responsivity to new stimuli. 1. Pliszka SR et al.
