Code Fellows – Veteran Program --> Serve. Learn Code. Get A Job.
1. Code Fellows – Veteran Program
Serve. Learn Code. Get a Job.
The Challenges
In one hand, we have a talent challenge - the US has a technology talent shortage.
Almost most of the open positions found online are for technology engineers. In
the other hand, former military personnel are having a very tough time finding
jobs post military service. According to the Washington Post over 10% of post
9/11 veterans are unemployed.
Well, we figured, why not bring the hands together and build a program that
retrains former military personnel on how to code. The concept is simple, they
served our country, we teach them code, and they get a job.
U.S. News and World Report indicates that the median salary for an IT manager in
New York is $156,730—a passion giving men and women who’ve served our
country an opportunity to develop in this field is driving our efforts.
The NYC/Tri-State Veteran Program
In Spring 2014 Code Fellows will invite 20 former military personnel in the TriState area to attend their JavaScript coding Bootcamp in NYC. Code Fellows,
who is planning to extend their operations to the East Coast in 2014, will host the
classes. The course is an 8-week 7 days week Bootcamp in JavaScript. Learn

JavaScript is the most ubiquitous programming language in history. It's
everywhere and in every browser, and now it's being used on servers. JavaScript is
one of the fastest growing areas of software development. Join this Bootcamp and
position yourself at the cutting edge.
You'll get the basics
All software developers need a foundational knowledge of computer science. Our
Bootcamp students learn the essentials of data structures and algorithms—standard
industry knowledge. Equipped with this, your programming background, and your
2. Bootcamp experience, you're ready for the job market. We guarantee it. If you're a
first-timer, learn to code here.
Get working with JavaScript on Day One
Bootcamp is intense. Consider it a full-time job for eight weeks. Learning starts on
day one. You'll spend your mornings in the classroom, working with world-class
instructors, getting specialized attention, and honing your software development
skills—prepare you for a successful career in tech.
Intensive team projects
In popular imagination, developers work isolated and alone: headphones on with
energy drinks and potato chips close at hand. This might be true in some cases, but
we believe in collaboration. We reserve the afternoons for intensive team projects.
Work together with other students in the center of New York’s startup & tech
world.
What happens in Bootcamp?
Although every day will be a little different, you can expect consistency. Monday
through Friday mornings, you'll be in class learning to code, getting one-on-one
attention from instructors and teaching assistants. In the afternoons you'll work on
team projects with other Code Fellows, learning collaboratively. On Fridays, guest
speakers give lectures. You get the opportunity to learn from and network with the
brightest in the industry.
Setting you up for success
Part of guaranteeing a job is preparing you for a job. We'll help you develop the
interview skills necessary for you to perform your best when you enter the market.
Our goal is to help you become a professional software developer.
Applications will open in Q1-2014
How can your company help?
1. Hire a class. Companies can commit to hiring a class of intensely trained
JavaScript coders, which includes the cost of converting the member to a
full time employee.
2. Sponsor a class. Companies can sponsor the cost of the class for one or all
of the veterans taking the Bootcamp.
3. 3. Sponsor a veteran. A company can commit to sponsoring or hiring a
veteran (or two) from the class, which is the cost of converting them to a
full-time staff member or the cost of the Bootcamp.
4. Support through PR and distribution through your company and external
networks.
