4. COPYRIGHT
“…Section 106 of the 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize
others to do the following:
• To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords;
• To prepare derivative works based upon the work;
• To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by r

= Creative works belong to the people who made
them, and using them without permission is stealing,
except when your use complies with the tenets of the Fair Use clause…
5. COPYRIGHT
• Copyright protection is automatic, and it applies to published and
unpublished works
• Extends 70 years after the author’s/creator’s death
• Original intent was to encourage creative production
• Fair Use provides parameters legally/ethically using or repurposing
copyrighted materials
6. FAIR USE

7. Four Factors of Fair Use:
• What is the character of the use?
• What is the nature of the work to
be used?
• How much of the work will you
use?
• What effect would this use have on
the market value of the original?

8. CREATIVE COMMONS
Licenses granted by the

others to use, modify, and
adapt their work.

Hinweis der Redaktion
Anne - Copyright – Ethical use of information is key, and so we need to understand a little bit about copyright and what our rights are when it comes to using sources for research. So first a little bit about copyright….
Anne
Anne - In an educational Setting, we have fair use, which allows us to do more with copyrighted content than if we were using it for our own personal creations or gain
Anne - How do we know when fair use applies?
Anne - Creative Commons is a relatively new form of copyright that authors and media creators sometimes choose. They give permission via the license for others to use their work.
Anne - Great places to look for media clips – images and music; demo of flickr CC searching – use Joe Paterno; demo of LionSearch limiting to archival items, images, etc.
