Q3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
TYPES OF AUDIENCE FEEDBACK RECEIVED SELF ASSESSMENTS ON OUR OWN MUSIC VIDEO PEER ASSESSMENTS ON EACH OTHER'S MUSIC VIDEO IN THE CLASS Assessing a music video from last year Feedback from media experts on a panel during the viewing evening (17/03/2011)
Feedback from the Viewing Evening We showcased the rough cut of our music video to a panel of media experts during a viewing evening. We received vast amounts of praise and criticisms which was beneficial as it aided me in making improvements the music video enabling it to receive a higher grade and appeal to our target audience more effectively. From this evening, I learnt from the feedback that we received that: Our music video utilized the codes and conventions of R’n’B/Hip Hop music videos well (the codes and conventions of this genre is an element of the music video that we wanted to promote. By them identifying this highlights that we have conveyed this clearly and is a message signaled to our target audience). Good use and a range of shot angles (by them identifying this helps us know that this will be noticed by our target audience and we did this to make our music video more visually interesting.
Feedback from the Viewing Evening Continued… We made use of good use of transitional effects (we used a range of transitional effects like blurs and zoom in’s this make our music video more intriguing and subverts a typical R’n’B/Hip Hop music video). Replace the footage of the club scene as it isn't consistent with the rest of the music video. ( The club scene we had as part of the music video was a better quality than the rest of the music video therefore the music video as a whole did not look coherent or consistent which caused slight confusion). Make sure that all sound audios are on before exporting the footage. (During our music video there is a interlude whereby there is suppose to be a heartbeat playing. In this version of the music video it did not play as I forgot to turn that audio on whilst exporting the music video). All in all the feedback from that evening was extremely beneficial and I learnt a lot about different aspects of our music video, how well it conveyed the themes and messages we tried to portray and areas that we could improve on. From reviewing the criticism, as a group we decided to re-shoot the club scene section of the music video in order to make the video more consistent in terms of quality, as the previous one was better than the rest of the footage, which will in turn improve the overall music video
Peer Assessment Feedback Conducting a peer-assessment was vital in the creation of our music video as our video is targeted at a young audience and our peers fit into our ideal audience. Alongside this, they have the ability to provide us with criticism which we can work on. This was done before the Viewing Evening. When endeavouring on this activity I have learnt from the feedback that: They had some of the same praises that was highlighted during the viewing evening such as having a variety of shots and transitional effects and having a clear narrative. This is good as it tells us as a group that our music video is understandable in terms of the narrative. Also the fact that some points are reinforced shows us that certain aspects that we consciously included like the transitional effects are easy to notice. The like the way in which the male performer was well synchronised. By them identifying this allows us not to worry about this as it looks realistic and professional.
Peer Assessment Feedback Continued…. It was said that out music video would be even better if we: Made sure that all the green particles that was formed around our male performer during the green scene performance section is eliminated. Although our peers enjoyed our use of superimposed imagery within the music video they suggested that if we adjusted the opacity in some scenes the image would be more clearer aiding it in telling the storyline better. We also conducted a self-assessment in the same format whereby members of my group and I identified what was working well within our music video and what we could improve on. By doing this coupled with the peer assessment I have learnt how to be critical of my own work and to provide solid feedback. I also have an increased understanding of what is needed to undergo this activity and how to perform it effectively.
Assessing a Music video from the Previous Year This was one of the activities we did at the beginning stages of making our music video. We had to assess an A2 music video from the previous year titled ‘Thump’. We identified that they made a good connection between the lyrics and imagery, for instance when the word ‘thump’ was said the performer would pump his fist to signify this. However, there was flaws evident in the music video, for example the lip synching was off and slower than it needed to be. By identifying and learning these things early on helped us avoid the same flaws such as not having a steady camera or not using a range of shot sizes/ distances which was helpful and allowed us to produce a music video to a higher standard.
Through receiving vast amounts of praise and criticism from various amounts and types of people has given me a better understanding of what it takes to create a music video and how to target our audience more better which is beneficial. From listening to the audience feedback I have personally learnt how to conduct it and how valuable the feedback is. By gathering information like this it can improve your media product and make it more successful which is important especially in the real world context if this product were selling as it will appeal to and target your audience more accurately.
