WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES
Windows Deployment Services is a feature in server 2008 that is used
to Install the Operating System (Vista, Server 2008 & Windows 7) on
the Client side. In previous version of Server we had the feature of RIS
(Remote Installation Services) that is used to install only (Windows
XP, Server 2003) It also takes long time to copy all the file and folder
from the CD Rom & It also had the long method of configuration. But
the Server 2008 takes less time then RIS. It also has a very short
configuration. It copy only two CAB file from DVD Rom (Install.wim
& Boot.wim).

WDS
DNS : - A well configured and running DNS to resolution of name and to
configuration of Active Directory.
DHCP : - A configured DHCP Server to provide IP address to client for
Communication with WDS Server.
Domain Controller : - To provide Authentication to the WDS Client
and Authorization to the DHCP Server.
NTFS Volume : - For Security and Installation of Domain Controller
(Domain Controller can not be loaded on FAT Volume).

PXE LAN Card : - It stands for Pre-boot Execution Environment.
These type LAN card has the inbuilt Driver in their memory. Therefore
It gets the IP address before Installation of Operation System.
Network Connection : - Network must be configured properly to
received the Installation files and folder from WDS Server.

then Key
Servermana
ger.msc and
then Press
Enter.
Point to
Roles and
then Click
on Add
Roles.

Wizard the

And press
Next to
continue.

Deployment
Services
from the
Bottom of
List.
And then
Click Next
to continue

Overview of
Windows
Deployment
Services
click Next to
execute

Select Role
Services
page make
sure that the
Both
(Deployment
Server &
Transport
Server) are
selected
And then
Click Next
to continue

On confirm
Installation
Selections
page click
Install to
install the
WDS
Services.

The
Installation
Progress
page will be
looks like
the same as
in the
Figure.

In the
Installation
Results page
click Close
to close the
page.

To
Configure
the WDS
press
Windows + r
key together
to open Run.
Then key
wdsmgmt.m
sc to open
WDS
Management
page.
Click OK.

displayed.

Expand
Server and
then Right
Click on
FQDN of
Server (ex.
Server.Contoso.
com)
And then
click on
Configure
Server.

Welcome
Page will be
displayed
where the
server side
requirement
will be
listed.
Click Next
to continue

In the
Remote
Installation
Folder
Location
page by
default
C:RemoteInstall
will be
Selected
Click Next
if you want
to save the
folder on the
C: Drive.
Otherwise
Browse the
Location.

 A System
Volume
Warning
message will
be display if
you select
the C: Drive
to store the
Remote
Installation
files.
Click Yes
to Terminate
the warning.

Make sure
that both
Options are
selected in
the DHCP
Option 60
page. And
then click
Next to
continue.

On the
PXE Server
Initial
Settings
page select
“Respond to
all (known
and
unknown )
client
computers”
and then
click Finish.

finishing the
last page.

Remove
the Check
mark from
“Add image
to the
Windows
Deployment
Server now”
in
Configuratio
n Complete
page.
And then
click Finish.

FQDN of
Server (ex.
Server.contoso.
com)
Right Click
on Install
Image.
Click on
Add Install
Image.

In the
Image
Group Page
give a Group
Name next
to Create a
new image
group or Let
them same.
And click
Next to
continue.

After
clicking
Next Press
Browse from
Image File.

WDS
Click on
Computer
from
Favorite
Links.

WDS
And then
double click
on DVD
Rom Drive.

WDS
Double
Click on
Source
Folder in the
DVD Rom.

Select
Install.wim
from Source
folder and
then Click
Open.

Open from
Previous
page click
Next to
continue.

only the
Edition that
you want to
install on the
client side
and then
click Next.

Click Boot
Image.

click Browse

File page.

click Open.

the links is
listed in the
Boot Image.
