Assignment title ENVIRONMENT – Urban Sights and Sounds

The purpose of this assignment is to:
Use mark-making techniques to create and develop 2D imagery from direct observation.
Use 3D construction techniques to create and develop 3D imagery from direct observation.
Use field recording techniques to capture and edit sound assets.

 Scenario
Manchester’s urban landscape is a rich, diverse collection of old and new architecture. A local games design company has invited
Salford City College Games Design level 3 students to generate drawings, photographs and sound recordings based on the theme
of urban environment. These may be used in a brand new games concept, set on the streets of Manchester.

Many artists and musicians have been inspired by Manchester; and as a result the ‘rainy city’ features in paintings, photographs,
 poems and songs throughout history.
As a city it hosts an incredible array of contemporary and historical architecture; and this aspect of Manchester is what you will
turn your attention to in this new assignment.

You will produce two pieces of art work with Mandy; these will be 2D and 3D, along with a sketchbook full of research,
photographs and artists’ reproductions. With Iain, you will produce ambient sound recordings of various urban environments that
you will integrate into a short video that presents your 2D environment illustrations on your blog.
Tasks Grading Criteria Mapping

Task 1
You will begin by gathering secondary source material from the Internet, books and magazines. This Unit 2 – P1, M1, D1
will include image and text, based on architectural structures (buildings, bridges, arches, churches…) Unit 2 – P2, M2, D2
Begin to collage these into your sketchbooks and produce drawings from the images, exploring line,
pattern, tone, texture and colour. Use a wide range of media and techniques, such as pencil, fine
liner, ink, oil pastel, paint, collage.

Task 2
You will also prepare for the visit to Manchester by learning how to use the recording kits and Unit 73 – P3, M3, D3
demonstrating your competency by making experimental recordings around the college grounds

Task 3
You will visit some of Manchester’s finest and most iconic buildings; Town Hall, Central Library, John Unit 2 – P1, M1, D1
Rylands Library, Hilton, Urbis.
Ensure that at each venue you have taken photographs and drawn directly from selected areas, inside
and out. Present the resulting sketchbook work on your blog.

Task 4
(In teams) make as wide a range of sound recordings of the city as possible. What you record is not Unit 73 – P3, M3, D3
important, but the recording quality is.

Task 5
Back at college, review drawings and photographs and begin to select areas of particular interest. Unit 3 – P1, M1, D1
Using Sculptural processes manipulate paper and wire to explore shape, form and texture. Various Unit 3 – P2, M2, D2
techniques will involve layering and incorporating text to reflect the decorative and industrial style of
Manchester. Photograph the resulting work and present it on your blog.
Also, find, organise and re-name your sound recordings from the city centre and save copies in your
own work folders in My Documents and your folder on the creative media terabyte server.

Task 6
Edit your sound recordings with your completed visuals, using Audacity to edit your sounds Adobe Unit 73 – P3, M3, D3
Premiere to sequence your sound recordings with your images. Upload the completed sequence to your
blog as an embedded video from YouTube.

Task 7
Produce a written evaluation of your project work, analysing how you used 2D and 3D formal elements Unit 2 – P3, M3, D3
in your work. Unit 3 – P3, M3, D3

Environment Assignment

  • 1. Assignment brief Qualification Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production – GAMES DESIGN L2 Unit2 2D Visual Communication Unit number and title L2 Unit3 3D Visual Communication L3 Unit 73 Sound for Computer Games - Partial Start date 19th September 2011 Deadline 10th November 2011 Assessor name Mandy Panesh and Iain Goodyear Assignment title ENVIRONMENT – Urban Sights and Sounds The purpose of this assignment is to: Use mark-making techniques to create and develop 2D imagery from direct observation. Use 3D construction techniques to create and develop 3D imagery from direct observation. Use field recording techniques to capture and edit sound assets. Scenario Manchester’s urban landscape is a rich, diverse collection of old and new architecture. A local games design company has invited Salford City College Games Design level 3 students to generate drawings, photographs and sound recordings based on the theme of urban environment. These may be used in a brand new games concept, set on the streets of Manchester. Many artists and musicians have been inspired by Manchester; and as a result the ‘rainy city’ features in paintings, photographs, poems and songs throughout history. As a city it hosts an incredible array of contemporary and historical architecture; and this aspect of Manchester is what you will turn your attention to in this new assignment. You will produce two pieces of art work with Mandy; these will be 2D and 3D, along with a sketchbook full of research, photographs and artists’ reproductions. With Iain, you will produce ambient sound recordings of various urban environments that you will integrate into a short video that presents your 2D environment illustrations on your blog.

Unit 3 – P1, M1, D1 Using Sculptural processes manipulate paper and wire to explore shape, form and texture. Various Unit 3 – P2, M2, D2 techniques will involve layering and incorporating text to reflect the decorative and industrial style of Manchester. Photograph the resulting work and present it on your blog. Also, find, organise and re-name your sound recordings from the city centre and save copies in your own work folders in My Documents and your folder on the creative media terabyte server. Task 6 Edit your sound recordings with your completed visuals, using Audacity to edit your sounds Adobe Unit 73 – P3, M3, D3 Premiere to sequence your sound recordings with your images.
