2. Contents
• Explanations of a robot
• Perceptions of robots
• Recent roles and development
• Ethical issues
3. What are robots?
• “A robot is a mechanised tool that reacts in a
controlled manner to given commands and it often has a
sense for the environment in which it operates. It
doesn’t have to be like the Terminator, humanoids are
just one class of robots. An XY robot that draws on a
piece of paper in 2D or an autonomous car that
drives through the desert or through an urban
neighbourhood is still a robot.
They come in all shapes, manners and sizes.”
Dr Jaime Valls Miro - University of Technology Sydney
4. What are robots?
• “A robot is an information and communication technology
application. One of the things that distinguishes it
from a standard computer is that it has a friendly,
human-like face. It has got some human-like
characteristics.”
Dr Rajiv Khosla - La Trobe University
“[Robots are] programmable machines [that are] capable
of interacting with and manipulating their environment.”
Dr Robert Sparrow - Monash University
5. Perceptions of robots
• Throughout history popular science fiction media
has played a role in shaping our perceptions and
expectations of the imminent arrival of artificial
intelligent human like entities.
• Examples: Metropolis, 1927
2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968
The Terminator, 1984
The Matrix, 1999
Artificial Intelligence: AI, 2001
iRobot, 2004
6. Current roles
• Driverless vehicles
• Car manufacturing
(increased
productivity)
• Security surveillance
• Military (bomb
disposal)
• Artificial companions
7. Recent developments
• The creation and
development of childcare
robots.
• Robots being developed
to help with aged care
and rehabilitation.
• Research and development
by numerous companies to
create robots which
detect and respond to
human emotions.
• Google’s development of
self driving cars.
8. Interesting research
points
• Do we need artificial intelligence moral agents,
and if so whose morality will they apply?
• Will machine intelligence match or even exceed
that of human intelligence, and when?
• The development of new technology and
artificial intelligence and how the
technology has changed our lives.
9. Ethical issues to
explore
• The impact of such technology on children’s well
being.
• Leaving human life in the hands of machines
could have unfortunate consequences.
• Consulting the right people in developing
artificial intelligent machines.
• Who are we really creating them for?
