  RESEARCH & PLANNING

    CENTRE NO: 11049

ST FRANCIS XAVIER COLLEGE
My name is Angel Boakye

  Candidate No: 1059
My main portfolio project is:
       Short Film

  with 2 ancillary projects:

Film magazine Review Page

        Film Poster
The genre(s) of my main project is:
• Genre: Urban Drama

• Title is: Dollar Dollar

• Target audience is aimed at :Teenagers 16-21
So I have researched as follows:
• Model 1 • Model 2
                    If not now,
 Attack
                    when ?
What I learned from this was…..
                      (develop as required)

• Design aspect 1 • Design aspect 2

• Darkness • Set in day time
• Night time • More dialogue
• Flashing police lights • Happy vibe
• Alley way • Family orientated
• The question of the • Gang attack
    unknown.
For my main project….
• The target audience is aimed at teenagers (young
adults) roughly of the age 16-21

Here is how I arrived at this conclusion:
• We had to come up with a suitable target
  audience that was appropriate for
teenagers to view due to weapons and
  drugs contained in the film.
Target Audience
                                    • Image of target
                                        audience
• Here are images of my typical
    target audience
• Their characteristics are:

 OUT GOING
 CONFIDENT
 INQUISITIVE
 OPINIONATED
What I learned from audience feedback about
              planning my main task

• FEED BACK

Suitable actors/people who can help
Variety of locations
Use of props
Good script/dialogue
Here are 4 original photographs for
       the storyboard……
I modified each photograph; here is
the original next to the final version:
• Raw 1 • Final 1

• Here is how I changed the photograph and why
• I decided to change the photograph because
originally the brightness of the image was to
  light.
And the second one:
• Raw 2 • Final 2

• Here is how I changed the photograph and why
• I changed the contrast of this image because I
wanted the colours to look more natural and not
  false.
And the third one:
• Raw 3 • Final 3

• Here is how I changed the photograph and why
• As I took the image the light was overpowering. I
changed this image in Photoshop and played
around with the contrast and brightness.
And the last one:
• Raw 4 • Final 4

• Here is how I changed the photograph and why
• Originally the photo I had taken was a little too
dark so I altered this in Photoshop so that it
  looked clearer.
What I learned from audience feedback
             about my main task
 Special effects- i.e. to add Smokey, cloudy effect to the
flashback shown in the beginning of the film.
 In order to receive some feedback about our main task,
I asked the audience to write on a piece of paper what
  they thought about our film.
 Many people said they liked the way we had chosen to
subvert the ending by having the female character die at
the end of our short film who is the victim, instead of
having the main character who causes all the trouble.
This caused a debate which lead to everyone voicing
  their opinions.
Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 1
                  • What I have learned
• Model 1
                  • In order to create my film
                    poster, I looked at this
                    poster for inspiration. I
                    liked the positioning of
                    the iphones in the
                    background so I decided
                    to create a similar
                    background but using the
                    slanting houses as my
                    background.
Professional Model 2 for Ancillary 1
• Model 2 • What I have learned.

                  • I decided to use this film
                    poster as an example for
                    inspiration. Again I really
                    liked the composition and
                    positioning of this poster
which draws me in to the
                    chaotic background. The
                    text is simple and legible
                    for the audience to read.
This is my ancillary task 1
               • This is how it appeals to my
                   target audience

I feel the image appeals to my
target audience by having a young
teenager of the same age as my
audience on the poster for others
                 to relate to.
 Font style- I chose these stylish
                 fonts to represent the different
                 styles of teenagers today.
 I also feel it appeals to my target
                 audience by letting the images
                 speak for themselves, rather than
heaps of information on the poster
being thrown at them; this would
                 make the teenagers lose interest,
so I kept it short and precise.
This is how key concepts link main
          task and ancillary task 1
• Narrative - We decided the name of our short film is called Dollar
Dollar for the reasons that the main character in our story is called
Dollar Dollar which is his nickname. His friends call him this due to
the fact that his always making money by not going about it in the
right way such as being involved in drugs and hanging around with
    the wrong crowd.

• Genre – my genre is urban drama, and I have tried to relate this to
all my media texts through the images I have selected. Genre-
    scenes of violence and drugs.

• Representation – I decided to include a nice apartment in the
background and then place the main character at the centre, to
show that this character is living a wealthy life.
What I learned from audience
    feedback about ancillary task 1
• The comments I had for my poster was that they liked
the use of my camera angle for the background and the
composition of the person on my poster but some people
did comment on the quality of the photograph. If I had
the chance to change anything then I would certainly
perfect the quality of this image. Some people said they
liked the fact that I made an effort to link the poster to the
review page by adding the logo and company name.
Many people commented on the shadow behind the
young boy which they thought looked effective. Others
also said that instead of saying ‘coming soon’, I also
could have added the release date to notify the
audience. If I could change anything, this would be one
of the things I would correct.
Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 2
• Model 1 • I used this review page as an
                      example for gathering ideas for
my own. I realised that I
                      needed to have clear photos
that told a story, so that the
                      audience would be interested,
                      especially my targeted
audience. I also realised that I
                      shouldn’t have too much
                      information on the page
                      because it could distract my
                      audience from reading the text.
I did not want to bombard them
                      with too much information at
                      once.
Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 2
• Model 1 • What I have learned

I chose to look at this
                    review page in general
                    because the use of colour
                    really stood out; I wanted
to interpret this in my own
                    review page. Again, the
pictures tell a story for the
                    audience as well as the
                    genre.
This is my ancillary project 2
                         This is how it
                         appeals to my target
                         Audience

                          Clear format/fonts -
                           i.e. not too much text.
                          Interesting images, so
                           that the audience can
                           have an idea of what
                           my film is about as
                           well as the genre.
                          Information-
                           information to draw
                           the audience to check
out the film as well as
                           our website.
This is how key concepts link main
task, ancillary tasks 1 and 2
• Narrative - this is mainly shown in the main task, as we watch the short film
the character tells a story of how they go about their everyday life. Ancillary
task 1 is linked to the main task, the male character almost tells a story from
his facial expression from his life. Ancillary task 2 is linked to these two as it
shows a series of pictures from the main task of what is going to happen.

• Genre – my genre is urban drama, and I have tried to relate this to all my
media texts through the images I have selected.

• Representation- I have represented London in a negative way so I had to be
careful with the type of representation that I was showing. I tried to get the
message across that having underage sex, taking drugs, and committing
criminal offences can be caused by young people not in a stable family,
uneducated and having too much time on their hands. These ideologies are
also shown in the film Kidulthood.
What I learned from audience
   feedback about ancillary task 2
• When I asked my audience which media
text they thought looked more successful
the majority were swayed towards the
review page, saying that the positioning of
the images were creative and the
Photoshop images at the bottom were
imaginative. Many said that they felt as if
they were reading a real review page
because of the layout and positioning.
Changes made in the re-draft of
           main task
• Music – (We decided to add more
intervals of music to add to the tension.)
• Effects- We included flashbacks, and slow
  motion effects.
• Re-shoot- we had to re-shoot a particular
scene to perfect the quality of the sound
  as well as the acting.
Changes made in the re-draft of
         ancillary task 1
• Font style- I had a long debate over the
font style that I was originally going to use,
but in the end I decided to change the font
to something much more clear and legible.
• Image- In the beginning I originally had the
main character on the poster placed in the
middle, but I felt it looked out of place so
repositioned it on the right hand side as
well as adding the shadow effect to make
  it look more interesting.
Changes made in the re-draft of
          ancillary task 2
• Colour scheme- I originally had the background colour
plain white but I felt that it looked too plain and basic, so
I went for a another colour that would be unisex. This is
  when I chose black.
• Frames- in the beginning of creating my review page the
images had no frames around them; I felt as if something
was missing. This is when I decided to add the red frame
around two pictures which made the review page come
  alive.
• Altering- I also decided to alter the stars on my review
page so that they were aligned with each other and not
  out of place.
How my products work together to
   appeal to target audience

 linked the web address on both texts
 Logo is shown on both media texts
 Similar fonts are shown on each
 The images relate to each other.

A2 research planning_2011-12 week 7

  • 1. A2 MEDIA STUDIES ADVANCED PORTFOLIO RESEARCH & PLANNING CENTRE NO: 11049 ST FRANCIS XAVIER COLLEGE
  • 2. My name is Angel Boakye Candidate No: 1059
  • 3. My main portfolio project is: Short Film with 2 ancillary projects: Film magazine Review Page Film Poster
  • 4. The genre(s) of my main project is: • Genre: Urban Drama • Title is: Dollar Dollar • Target audience is aimed at :Teenagers 16-21
  • 5. So I have researched as follows: • Model 1 • Model 2 If not now, Attack when ?
  • 6. What I learned from this was….. (develop as required) • Design aspect 1 • Design aspect 2 • Darkness • Set in day time • Night time • More dialogue • Flashing police lights • Happy vibe • Alley way • Family orientated • The question of the • Gang attack unknown.
  • 7. For my main project…. • The target audience is aimed at teenagers (young adults) roughly of the age 16-21 Here is how I arrived at this conclusion: • We had to come up with a suitable target audience that was appropriate for teenagers to view due to weapons and drugs contained in the film.
  • 8. Target Audience • Image of target audience • Here are images of my typical target audience • Their characteristics are:  OUT GOING  CONFIDENT  INQUISITIVE  OPINIONATED
  • 9. What I learned from audience feedback about planning my main task • FEED BACK Suitable actors/people who can help Variety of locations Use of props Good script/dialogue
  • 10. Here are 4 original photographs for the storyboard……
  • 11. I modified each photograph; here is the original next to the final version: • Raw 1 • Final 1 • Here is how I changed the photograph and why • I decided to change the photograph because originally the brightness of the image was to light.
  • 12. And the second one: • Raw 2 • Final 2 • Here is how I changed the photograph and why • I changed the contrast of this image because I wanted the colours to look more natural and not false.
  • 13. And the third one: • Raw 3 • Final 3 • Here is how I changed the photograph and why • As I took the image the light was overpowering. I changed this image in Photoshop and played around with the contrast and brightness.
  • 14. And the last one: • Raw 4 • Final 4 • Here is how I changed the photograph and why • Originally the photo I had taken was a little too dark so I altered this in Photoshop so that it looked clearer.
  • 15. What I learned from audience feedback about my main task  Special effects- i.e. to add Smokey, cloudy effect to the flashback shown in the beginning of the film.  In order to receive some feedback about our main task, I asked the audience to write on a piece of paper what they thought about our film.  Many people said they liked the way we had chosen to subvert the ending by having the female character die at the end of our short film who is the victim, instead of having the main character who causes all the trouble. This caused a debate which lead to everyone voicing their opinions.
  • 16. Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 1 • What I have learned • Model 1 • In order to create my film poster, I looked at this poster for inspiration. I liked the positioning of the iphones in the background so I decided to create a similar background but using the slanting houses as my background.
  • 17. Professional Model 2 for Ancillary 1 • Model 2 • What I have learned. • I decided to use this film poster as an example for inspiration. Again I really liked the composition and positioning of this poster which draws me in to the chaotic background. The text is simple and legible for the audience to read.
  • 18. This is my ancillary task 1 • This is how it appeals to my target audience I feel the image appeals to my target audience by having a young teenager of the same age as my audience on the poster for others to relate to.  Font style- I chose these stylish fonts to represent the different styles of teenagers today.  I also feel it appeals to my target audience by letting the images speak for themselves, rather than heaps of information on the poster being thrown at them; this would make the teenagers lose interest, so I kept it short and precise.
  • 19. This is how key concepts link main task and ancillary task 1 • Narrative - We decided the name of our short film is called Dollar Dollar for the reasons that the main character in our story is called Dollar Dollar which is his nickname. His friends call him this due to the fact that his always making money by not going about it in the right way such as being involved in drugs and hanging around with the wrong crowd. • Genre – my genre is urban drama, and I have tried to relate this to all my media texts through the images I have selected. Genre- scenes of violence and drugs. • Representation – I decided to include a nice apartment in the background and then place the main character at the centre, to show that this character is living a wealthy life.
  • 20. What I learned from audience feedback about ancillary task 1 • The comments I had for my poster was that they liked the use of my camera angle for the background and the composition of the person on my poster but some people did comment on the quality of the photograph. If I had the chance to change anything then I would certainly perfect the quality of this image. Some people said they liked the fact that I made an effort to link the poster to the review page by adding the logo and company name. Many people commented on the shadow behind the young boy which they thought looked effective. Others also said that instead of saying ‘coming soon’, I also could have added the release date to notify the audience. If I could change anything, this would be one of the things I would correct.
  • 21. Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 2 • Model 1 • I used this review page as an example for gathering ideas for my own. I realised that I needed to have clear photos that told a story, so that the audience would be interested, especially my targeted audience. I also realised that I shouldn’t have too much information on the page because it could distract my audience from reading the text. I did not want to bombard them with too much information at once.
  • 22. Professional Model 1 for Ancillary 2 • Model 1 • What I have learned I chose to look at this review page in general because the use of colour really stood out; I wanted to interpret this in my own review page. Again, the pictures tell a story for the audience as well as the genre.
  • 23. This is my ancillary project 2 This is how it appeals to my target Audience  Clear format/fonts - i.e. not too much text.  Interesting images, so that the audience can have an idea of what my film is about as well as the genre.  Information- information to draw the audience to check out the film as well as our website.
  • 24. This is how key concepts link main task, ancillary tasks 1 and 2 • Narrative - this is mainly shown in the main task, as we watch the short film the character tells a story of how they go about their everyday life. Ancillary task 1 is linked to the main task, the male character almost tells a story from his facial expression from his life. Ancillary task 2 is linked to these two as it shows a series of pictures from the main task of what is going to happen. • Genre – my genre is urban drama, and I have tried to relate this to all my media texts through the images I have selected. • Representation- I have represented London in a negative way so I had to be careful with the type of representation that I was showing. I tried to get the message across that having underage sex, taking drugs, and committing criminal offences can be caused by young people not in a stable family, uneducated and having too much time on their hands. These ideologies are also shown in the film Kidulthood.
  • 25. What I learned from audience feedback about ancillary task 2 • When I asked my audience which media text they thought looked more successful the majority were swayed towards the review page, saying that the positioning of the images were creative and the Photoshop images at the bottom were imaginative. Many said that they felt as if they were reading a real review page because of the layout and positioning.
  • 26. Changes made in the re-draft of main task • Music – (We decided to add more intervals of music to add to the tension.) • Effects- We included flashbacks, and slow motion effects. • Re-shoot- we had to re-shoot a particular scene to perfect the quality of the sound as well as the acting.
  • 27. Changes made in the re-draft of ancillary task 1 • Font style- I had a long debate over the font style that I was originally going to use, but in the end I decided to change the font to something much more clear and legible. • Image- In the beginning I originally had the main character on the poster placed in the middle, but I felt it looked out of place so repositioned it on the right hand side as well as adding the shadow effect to make it look more interesting.
  • 28. Changes made in the re-draft of ancillary task 2 • Colour scheme- I originally had the background colour plain white but I felt that it looked too plain and basic, so I went for a another colour that would be unisex. This is when I chose black. • Frames- in the beginning of creating my review page the images had no frames around them; I felt as if something was missing. This is when I decided to add the red frame around two pictures which made the review page come alive. • Altering- I also decided to alter the stars on my review page so that they were aligned with each other and not out of place.
  • 29. How my products work together to appeal to target audience  linked the web address on both texts  Logo is shown on both media texts  Similar fonts are shown on each  The images relate to each other.
