This document discusses using popular music in teaching at the secondary school level. It argues that popular music can help develop students' basic musical skills in a more approachable and enjoyable way, as the music is familiar to them. An example is provided of a year 8 rock music project where students work in groups to compose melodies in the style of pop-rock music. The document also addresses some of the teaching issues around using popular music, and notes that classical and popular music are becoming more integrated.
