Geography of Greece
• Greece is a small
country in Europe.
• The main part of
Greece in on a
peninsula.
• The rest of Greece
is made up of
islands.
Greece is a country that has to present many famous Greek people known for their
achievements and their influence to the civilization of the country in different
domains.
It would be an opportunity to read some information
about these people and get to know them better not
because they are Greeks but because they offered
something to the humanity as a whole.
Socrates 470 - 339 B.C.
• Socrates was a
philosopher of Ancient
Greece.
• Socrates is considered as
the original founder of
Western Philosophy.
• Socrates taught by asking
questions. This method
of questioning is still
called the Socratic
method.

Plato 427 - 347 B.C.
• Plato was a student of Socrates.
• He started a school called The Academy.
• Plato’s writing took the form of a dialogue between teacher
and student.
Aristotle 384 - 322 B.C.
• Aristotle was another Greek philosopher and student of
Plato.
• He wrote about science, art, law, poetry, and government.
He wrote narrative poems, epics
Such as the Iliad (Trojan War)
and the Odyssey (journey home)
Homer was one of the
greatest early Greek poets.
Legend has it that he was
blind and recited his poems
as he traveled from one
place to another.
Famous early historian
Wrote The History giving us a
glimpse into early Greek
history.
Known as the “Father of History”
Diplomat, politician
Founder of democracy in Athens
(wrote Athenian constitution)
Mathematician
Most famous for proving the Pythagorean Theorem a2 + b2 =c2
regarding right triangles
He had many followers
Great physician
Known as the
“Father of Medicine”
Euclid was a Greek mathematician and is often
referred to as the Father of Geometry.
Archimedes was a Greek
mathematician, physicist,
engineer, inventor, and
astronomer. He is generally
considered to be the
greatest mathematician of
antiquity and one of the
greatest of all time.
Alexander the Great (356 -323 B.C.)
• Alexander the Great was the son of King Phillip II of Macedonia.
• Alexander conquered Persia, Egypt, the Middle East and Northern India.
• He died at age 33
• Alexander the Great is probably the most famous Greek personality ever. His
life has yet become a legend and he is probably the most discussed military
man ever. His short life was full of adventures, conquests and experiences
Aristotle Onassis is probably the most famous Greek businessman
and he was considered one of the richest man in the world. In
1957 he founded Olympic Airways, the Greek national
airline company.
Eleftherios Venizelos, was a Greek revolutionary, a prominent statesman as well
as a charismatic leader in the early 20th century. Elected several times as Prime
Minister of Greece, serving from 1910 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1932, Venizelos
had such profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece that
he is credited with being "the maker of modern Greece“.
El Greco, as he is widely known, has been a painter,
sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance.
He was the first Greek to be honoured with the Nobel
Prize of Literature in 1963. His poems have been widely
translated
Elytis is one of the most important representatives of modernism in
Greece and was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979.
His work is translated in many languages and his books
sold millions of copies around the globe.
“I hope that the Parthenon Marbles will return in
Greece before I die. But even if they return later, I will
be reborn.”
A Greek actress, singer and politician.
Manos Hadjidakis, one of the greatest composers of
Greece
“Singing was not a reason to make a living. This is the only
thing I wanted to do.”
Nana Mouskouri is a very famous Greek singer. Her songs had a great success
all over the world and she recorded many of them in different languages,
including Greek, French, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Latin, Portuguese
and Japanese among others.
"I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free"
Some of his most famous novels are
Zorba the Greek (1946), Christ
Recrucified (1948), Captain Michalis and
the Last Temptation of Christ (1951).
Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was one of
the most important and talented Greek
writers and philosophers of the 20th
century. His work includes essays, novels,
poems, travelogues and translations of
classic works
Based on Zorba the Greek, Mihalis Cacoyannis has created a
movie at which the title character was played by Anthony Quinn.
Mikis Theodorakis is perhaps the most important Greek music
composer of the 20th century, and one of the most significant in
the world.
La Divina
She is one of the most famous dramatic coloratura sopranos and
perhaps the best-known opera singer of the twentieth century. In
2007, Callas was posthumously awarded the Grammy
Lifetime Achievement Award.
She is mostly called "La Divina"
A giver of life
Georgios Papanicolaou
was a Greek pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection,
and inventor of the "Pap test".
Spyros Louis was a
Greek water-carrier who
won the first modern-day
Olympic marathon at the
1896 Summer Olympics,
thereby becoming a national
hero.
Pyrros Dimas is considered the
best Greek weightlifter of all
time!
