1. SemanticWindows
1.What is SemanticWindows?
SemanticWindows aspires to be a social semantic
desktop application , designed to provide its users tools to
share, find and link common activities among themselves and
on the Web.
Nowadays users cand find lots of tools to help them find
information about information they find on the Web. Our
application desires to offer users the possibility of finding
information about local files and resources located on their
very own desktop.
SemanticWindows brings to your destkop all the info you
would otherwise need to search on the Web.
Another big part of our application feeds the human
desire of sharing thoughts, ideas and actions. Users are now
able to share what they are doing, whatching, reading or
listening to. Using two well known social networks apis, users
will share their actions much faster, being able to do so in just
two clicks.

2. Why SemanticWindows?
In the past few years the Web has began to offer more
and more tools to users that want to socialize, share and search
for things they are interested in. While most of these tools are
browser based, we felt the need to develop a tool that brings
web content to your desktop.
3. 3. Application prototype
As it name suggests, our application runs under Windows
operating system. The tools it provides will be embedded in the
context menu (that Windows Explorer provides) of each file
(see fig 3.1). Thus the user will have acces to the tools the
application provides by intantly accesing the context menu any
time the user wishes to do so.
We designed SemanticWindows as being composed of
two main components:
- Get Suggestions
- ActionSharing
The first one gives the user the posibility of getting
information related to his local files, while the second enables
him to share his actions related to the said files.
3.1. GetSuggestions
We designed this feature as a “bridge” between the
user’s desktop and the Web. Using GetSuggestions the user
sends a request to the application to find relevant information
of a certain file.
After the request has been made the user will receive
the suggestions our application finds. The suggestions will
depend on number of factors like type, name, and file type.
For each file the user will receive four suggestions in the
form of a popup on his right side of the desktop. After this the
user can follow one of this suggestions by clicking on it. This
will bring up a new browser tab with that suggestion.
4. `
Depending on the file type we will bring up suggestions
releveant to its nature.
We will use the following search engines to bring up
suggestions :
1. Photos : -Flickr
-Google Images
-Yahoo Image
-Panoramio
-Google Picasa
-Smugmug
2. Video data: -Youtube
