3. Dictionary of the Cypriot Dialect
According to German Linguist Jacob Grimm, "Our language
is our history.” This is even more evident in a dialect which is
unique to a certain region and has developed over the
centuries, capturing the culture of the people who speak it.
The Cypriot dialect is a variety of ancient and modern Greek,
with influences from French, Italian and Turkish. This reflects
the impact of the numerous conquerors who occupied the
island over the centuries. This unique dialect only spoken by
Cypriots on the island and abroad, captures the cultural
heritage of my country.
Therefore, to preserve the legacy of my country, I would
place a dictionary of the Cypriot dialect in the time capsule.
In the next slides, I will use the dictionary to explain the

Tsiatista are rhyming, two-verse poems
which are accompanied by music.
Usually two poets would compete in a folk-

The theme of most Tsiatista is usually
related to love and daily life. Therefore, I
think that this form of cultural expression
captures a significant aspect of the Cypriot
life and should be preserved for future
generations.
5. Cypriot Dance
Tatsia: The word comes from the Italian word
staccio for sieve.
Tatsia is a traditional Cypriot dance which requires
stamina, good coordination and great skill by the
performer. The dancer, uses a sieve in which he
places a glass of wine in the inside diameter. While
dancing, he spins the sieve, making sure he
doesn’t spill the wine. On some occasions, the
more skillful dancers will put more than one glass
in the sieve.
This form of dance was used traditionally by men to
compete with each other or to impress women.
