France counts 38 UNESCO-listed World Heritage sites. Many are religious edifices, for example four cathedrals and a number of Romanesque abbeys. Various towns steeped in history are also considered as World Heritage sites, such as the banks of the Seine in Paris, the historic centres of Lyon and Strasbourg, the Episcopal Ensemble in Avignon, the Port of the Moon in Bordeaux or, more recently, Episcopal City of Albi. Three natural sites have also been recognized in the prestigious UNESCO list: the Gulf of Porto, the Lagoons of New-Caledonia and Pitons, cirques and remparts of Reunion Island.
