Taylor (1856-1915) ï Father of âScientific Management. ï¶ attempted to define âthe one best wayâ to perform every task through systematic study and other scientific methods. ï¶ believed that improved management practices lead to improved productivity. ï Three areas of focus: ï¶ Task Performance ï¶ Supervision ï¶ Motivation

All rights reserved. 2â10 Supervision âą Taylor felt that a single supervisor could not be an expert at all tasks. ï As a result, each first-level supervisor should be responsible only workers who perform a common function familiar to the supervisor. ï This became known as âFunctional Foremanship.â

All rights reserved. 2â11 Motivation âą Taylor believed money was the way to motivate workers to their fullest capabilities. ï He advocated a piecework system in which workerâs pay was tied to their output. ï¶Workers who met a standard level of production were paid a standard wage rate. ï¶Workers whose production exceeded the standard were paid at a higher rate for all of their production output.

All rights reserved. 2â12 Scientific Management: The Gilbreths âą Frank Gilbreth ï Specialized in time and motion studies to determine the most efficient way to perform tasks. ï Used motion pictures of bricklayers to identified work elements (therbligs) such as lifting and grasping. âą Lillian Gilbreth ï A strong proponent of better working conditions as a means of improving efficiency and productivity. ï¶Favored standard days with scheduled lunch breaks and rest periods for workers. ï¶Strived for removal of unsafe working conditions and the abolition of child labor.
